Default Car TOTALED from getting Keyed!

The insurance guy came out yesterday to appraise the damage on my 1995 Sc400 wth 192K miles. Total damage was $6500.

He's telling me my car is only worth $3200!

I've got $2600 in Sparco seats!
Plus, new supra steering wheel, TT brakes, Diff, Wheels, HID Lighting, Towing package, Koni shocks, and all new control arms upper and lower on the front, etc..

NADA clean retail is $6400... I don't understand where this guy is getting his numbers?

What should I do?

I have to pay to retain salvage and pay $500 deductible. So this could be a grand in total or more which comes right off the top of the $3200... It wouldn't be soo bad if it was valued at $6400, but half that? What gives?

if you plan on keeping the car forever, do it.

people who buy cars are turned off by salvage titles

insurance companies usually dont take MODS into consideration when looking at a cars value. sucks to hear this though, buyback maybe?

NADA is not a very good source when trying to determine the EXACT value of a vehicle...most insurances use different sources...remember, they take into consideration your vehicle's mileage, condition, options(from the tires to the leather), etc....they really dont care much about your aftermarket stuff...although, if you have receipts, you can submit them to your insurance for review. Also, since it was totaled out, your insurance will either buy the vehicle from you and you will be able to buy it if back(if you want) or you can retain the vehicle and they will give a payout minus the salvage title and other fees.

I'm working on doing an 'appearance allowance'.

That will keep the car from totalling out.

man that sucks. On the appearance allowance will they still total it out or is that what you are looking into?

agreed, I would much rather pay the value myself over getting a salvage title.

What insurance co. are you using? Please dont tell me its a cheep-o off brand company. Eitherway i would dump them and get a new company.

It's progressive.

I feel the car is worth more than $3200.

They use autotex which is a division of autotrader. It's based on comparable SC that sold in this area.

WHICH in the 5 years I've been here, I've seen 3 and they've all been 92-94's.

The appearance allowance will save the car from totaling and getting a branded title.

Basically they cash me out at a certain threshold to keep the car from totaling. They don't have to pay as much money out and I stay happy without rigmarole of getting a salvage title.

Dude.. whenever you get a chance GET RID OF PROGRESSIVE. They suck BIG TIME! When I lived in FL I got into an accident and they refused to start working on my car untill they got an official report from the police dept. stating that I was the driver and not my girlfriend. It took a week before they even looked at my car. State Farm is the only way to go and I've had all of the major insurance companies.

I love State Farm. They may be a little bit more expensive but when you really need them its worth it. When i totalled my '96 Acura TL 3.2 they had me a check in two days. two days after i got the check, i had an SC and some $ left over for tune up and tint.

your insurance usually gives you what other people in your area is selling their similar sc for. Youll have to find one that has the same amount of mileage, same year, and excellent condition like yours which i doubt youll find. You can basically fight the amount they are willing to give you. Remember your insurance does not want to give you a whole lot of money, they want to give you as little as possible. You should try to get as much as you can, buy the car back and redo a clean titled sc.
