rev and o/d problem

rev and o/d problem
My overdrive light is flashing on and off, but the gear still engages. Also when in 2 or D the engine wont rev pass 4k, the rpm bounces like its hitting the fuel cut.
But in neutral and L it revs up to red line just fine.
Haven't had a chance to bring it to my mechanic yet but I am guessing the ECU is picking up a fault in the wiring or tranny and its going into safe mode.
Any ideas?
PS: its a 92 1JZ soarer
