Default SC4 Throttle Plate cleaning.

I knew it was in dire need of carbon removal, so today I decided to get it done.

Underhood

When I got the air intake ducting off all I could see inside was black. The Throttle Plate was caked in carbon. The picture I took did not show anything.

This is after the first spray into the throttle body. Notice the huge amount of carbon lossening up.

Mid way - you can start to see that the throttle plate is brass colored, not carbon black.

After cleaning - wow the throttle plate is actually brass colored.

The aftermath of towels.

nice and clean.i did that but on a 2jz.but i tied the throttle plate opened,i also bought a long bristle brush from the dollar store and sprayed it with the specified cleaner and brushed away i then wrapped the brush with a clean cloth and cleaned all the crap out it came out pretty good without having to take the throttle body apart.but check engine light came on for a little bit it went out later,i think it was the o2 sensor picking up some crud that got through the system.but it went out shortly after which was a good thing because i had just replaced them all

I recommend taking the throttle body off to clean, if not your take off driving down the road with a smoke screen behind you.

I did the same when I did my valve covers 2 weeks ago. That vacuum hose in the bottom is a pain to remove and put back if you decide to take off the TB for more efficient cleaning.

Im expecting it also has water hoses to remove that will be full of anti freeze, usually a pain.

It was 3M brand Carb and Throttle cleaner. it was about $7 or so from Napa. I used the same can to do my Honda last week - it was no where near as bad as the SC.

Good comment. I should have noted that I used a bottle brush from the Dollar Store. Worked well, but will get tosed now - way too nasty and cheap to reuse.

This can make your idle smother - mine was not really all that rough before, but glass smooth after.

It also will improve your throttle response due to removing carbon deposits that may keep the throttle plate from moving smoothly. - this I did have some and in the 5 miles I drove since finishing, the car does have a smoother throttle response.

Wait, how exactly did you clean it so well without taking it off?

a suggestion: that buildup is mostly due to crankcase vapors building up on the back side of the throttle. A normal occurrence, but when i recommend a throttle clean at work i always recommend a PCV valve to go with it. and extra couple bucks and it's cake to put in. just my .02
