Default Help with supra control arm install...

okay so here's my problem..
I am trying to install my new front lower ca's. I bought two new 96 supra ca's for my 92 sc400. After getting my old ones off, I held my the supra arms up to mount on and it seemed just a little off.. It does not slide in as smoothe I was expecting it to be. Did anyone else have this problem? I need some advice. I tried grease and banging it with a rubber mallot. No luck. I am starting to think it's not gonna work.

others have had problems with this before too. from what I have read/heard you just need to force them in there real hard.

I had the same exact problem and thought the same thing. Somehow between grease, a rubber mallet and a few choice words its went in fairly smoothly it seemed I wasnt aligning it right when I was doing it it took a little adjustment in the way I was putting it back for it to work. NOTE: It wasnt as smooth as everyone said and its would "slip right in" it should be a bit tight.

Good luck. PM with other questions.

Yeah when I installed mine, it didn't look right also. But I was able to do it by myself with a lot of force and it finally went right it. Good luck.

I know the Supra arms were a bit different as far as bushing were constructed but there should be 2 flat metal ends on each bushing where it contacts the camber bolt "U" shaped cleats.

If you can post a pic that might help but it should be the right ones ytou have.

yes that is correct the rubber bushing was different.

What I did was put the "extending" arm in the bracket. The one I am talking about is the part that comes out of the solid piece with the ball joint. then I a little grease in there and put the jack underneath it. I lined it up the best I could with my hand and then jacked it up. It slid right in. The other side moved the car a little and then popped right in.

I tried with a hammer and a mallet and a sledge and a pry bar and my youngest child. I could not beat it in place any other way. However with the jack it was quick and easy. A little frustrating after pounding away with no luck...

I had the same issue! I used a jack to get them into place...

When I put my Supra LCA's in I transfered the bush/washer piece over from my Lexus arms.

Matt.

Yes you must transfer the big bushing (rubber donut shaped bushing) over to they new LCA and position it the same way that it was on your old LCA's.

I thought bushings were one of the new components that you were buying with the new LCAs.

The large rubber donut shaped bushing that you must transfer over to your new LCA's is referred to in the Lexus Factory Repair Manual (Volume 1) as the "Lower suspension Arm Bushing Stopper". Just pop off the old LCA's and pop on to the new ones, and make sure they are facing the correct way. BTW, I just saw on Ebay a GREAT price on the Lexus SC Factory Repair Manuals Vol1,2,3 for like around $30, that's a steal!!!!! These Lexus factory repair manuals are darn near the best repair manuals of ANY make of auto made. Fabulous manuals for DIY!

Huh? The arms are complete...you dont transfer anything over thats the whole point of buying new arms is so you dont have to. I even printed off the process from the actual shop manual at the Lexus dealer it states nothing bout transfering any bushings.

The repair manuals you state are likely CD's for that price...I have those they are ok but I was mislead thought they were hard copies.

Yeah I believe you are right about the factory manuals most likely being CD's, pretty sneaky listing. As for the the large rubber donut shaped bushing that you must transfer over to your new LCA's it is referred to in the Lexus Factory Repair Manual (Volume 1) as the "Lower suspension Arm Bushing STOPPER" This part does ABSOLUTELY need to be transfered from/off of the old LCA's and put on the new LCA's. There is one per LCA and you can get by using the old one or Lexus sells new ones at $20 each. These just slide over one of the metal bushing inserts, one per LCA side. They come right off with your hand. They look like a smashed rubber donut. I have done three sets of LCA on three SC's, I know what I am talking about here, trust me. The part is pictured on page SA-39 of Volume One of the Lexus SC repair manual.
