A SC might be safe, but my daughters 1st car is going to be a 70 malibu. Cant go wrong with 2 tons of steel around you lol.

old cars are not safe at all... the reason new cars have crumple zones and such is so that all the crash energy is deferred to the chassis of the car, not the driver... those 2 tons of steel don't want to move when you hit something, so all the crash energy goes straight to the human body... newer cars crumple, absorbing some of the energy before it reaches the human body... like an F1 car.... those things can hit the wall at 200, and the driver get out and walk away... the whole car (except the driver compartment) virtually disentigrates upon impact...

Yep, exactally. There is a reason for crumple points. They just have to be in good locations... unlike the ford interceptor... crumpled into the gas tank!

You (OP) have obviously never driven an IS and an SC both or you'd know how different they feel. Closing the door on an IS is like popping the top on a pringles can. Totally different ride, much lighter feeling. (more than those numbers suggest, but yes the doors are much lighter - joked about but true)

My 97 5sp was 3680 the day I got it with a full tank and is 3540 now, with a few parts different, a full tank, and no spare.

I weighed my 97 sc300..

3400 lbs.

Quarter tank of gas.. and this was with the turbo, manifold, fmic, etc installed. Is this normal? I stepped on the scale, and it went up to 3570 (I weigh about 170 lbs), so the scale at the recycling center was probably pretty accurate. I was expecting 3500-3600, but it was exactly 3400 lbs.

Wow was this rolled at a race track in Australia?? I might have seen pics posted on Planet Soarer. The driver was standing next to the car with not a scratch on him. Amazing.

yea im a fairly new sc owner too, i bought mine a few month ago... i never looked back... as a matter of fact, i test drove a 5speed IS, and boy was i dissappointed... everything from inside the cabin to the feel of the door, and the trunk, as well as the test drive itself turns me off. Like OLT said, the doors are really light, i specifically remember closing the trunk of the IS, doesnt feel any different from closing the trunk on my old 97 240sx, makes me wonder how it would crumble up in an accident... i dont really feel safe in it.

As far as the interior goes, i think that it is quite cheaply put together as well, the leather feels cheap to me, the steering wheel doesnt move like the SC, and the interior space is not as expected. Ive been driving my sc for a few month now and im still finding new things that my SC has to offer! such as the memory seating, the little sun visor, the steering wheel "auto" button, etc. I love how some of the technology surpasses my friends 2000 BMW lol. However, i do like the cluster on the IS tho, its really pretty, but my friend who owns an IS tells me that he gets annoyed after a while, i dont know why tho, i love it lol

Upon driving the IS, i can feel the car handle a bit better than the sc around turns, but thats about it. So in the end, i decided to pay less and get more from an sc, with the money i save, i can make the car so much better than the IS. Plus i always loved the look of the SC, its got this timeless elegent look to it, nothing really looks the way an SC looks, where as i know alot of people believe that an IS looks pretty much like a glamorized civic since all the civics are driving around with the altezza taillight these days... Just my opinion tho.

And in terms of safety...Volvo would be my choice.

My sc400 weighed in at 3620 (on a scale that went in 20lbs increments). My roommates MKIII supra weighed exactly the same.

The SC has crumple zones built into it. The heaviness is a large part of what makes the ride so comfortable, and luxurious for a sport coupe. I agree, our cars are heavy, but they are not race cars, nor 2+2's. The SC will fit two adults in the back. If you want light, you will need to turn it into a race car like the SC300 I saw last night on the speed channel NOPI show that was televised. He had removed all interior panels. I am sure his car lost lots of weight.

Just an FYI, check out the weight of some of the most formidable sports cars and coupes out there right now:
  • 2008 Audi R8: curb weight of 3450 pounds
  • 2006 Lamborghini Murcielago: 3637 pounds
  • 2007 Ferrari F430: 3196
  • 2006 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren: 3897 pounds
  • 2007 BMW M6: 3769 pounds
  • 2008 Dodge Viper SRT10: 3450 pounds
  • 2007 Mercedes-Benz SLR 722 Edition: 3800 pounds
  • 2006 Porsche Carrera GT: 3043 pounds
  • 2006 Ford GT Tungsten: 3485 pounds
Just a few of the hottest cars on the road, and they are most all around the mid 3000 pound weight class...

right, and if the SC came stock with 600hp like some of those, i wouldn't care if it weighed in the mid 3000's, lol.
