For years I have been on CelicaTech as an avid Toyota owner and fan. I currently own two Celicas--1990 GT and 1972 ST. I drive the 1990 daily, but am wishing to make an upgrade. The car currently has 187k miles on it and runs like a dream. It does, however, have a modest oil leak-presumably from the common rear main seal. I've been researching some SC's for purchase and would like to get a 300 because of tunability with the 2JZ. Fuel economy also plays into my decision. I have found one for $3950 with 17" rims on it and 150k miles on the ODO.
What are common problems to look for with these cars? I don't drive my cars hard really. I occasionally will drive fast or go over 100 just because. I currently commute to IU and live about 30 minutes away and drive on highway to get there. Ninety percent of my miles are highway. I treat my cars with good care and change all fluids when recommended. I'll be sad to see my GT go, but I'd like more power and tunability. A 300 seems to fit my bill and is relatively cheaper than a lot of faster cars out there. I'd like to get a MKIV Supra, but we all know how much of a chance getting one of those is.
Best ideas?
Thanks
this link is awesome on things too look for. Give it a read.
How reliable is the 2JZ? It is a Toyota motor, but what's the majority of the forum's experience with them? I need something that will last me until I get out of grad school. I'm also very mechanically inclined and have done several swaps for Celicas, so replacing things on my own isn't an issue.
P.S. - I drove a '92 Celica GT for a while and loved it - good car.

The engine can and will last 400,000+ miles if you take care of it.
Things need to be replaced every now and then:
-Timing Belt (every 90k miles)
-Water Pump (120k)
-Alternator (120k)
-Starter (120k)
-Power Steering pump (120k)
-Plugs (60k)
I'm awaiting pictures of this 1992 SC from the current owner. He lives about two hours from me in Indianapolis, so I'd like to see it before I drive down to look. In all odds, I'd like to buy it. I need to arrange the funds first hand though.
Is there a parts website similar to http://www.1sttoyotaparts.com?
How hard is it to do the timing belt/water pump? If you have the timing belt ready to go in, you might as well do the WP as well.
I have pictures of my 72 here: http://s61.photobucket.com/albums/h62/audstuen/
Enjoy!
I'm awaiting my next pay check to get the clutch master and slave cylinder to put in. I blew the MC last week, as the fluid escaped the reservoir. I need a distributor seal and a few other things.
It in fact has 34k original miles and has spent it's entire life in northern Indiana. Garage kept, but has rust that we're addressing.
