I own a 1992 SC 400 - 150,000 miles and I have a "clunk" from the rear end when it downshifts into first (automatic) when it is on cold high idle as I come to a stop. It does not do it when the idle is "normal" and I come to a stop. Is this a bushing problem? Any TSB on this problem?

Ouch Sounds like your rear diff may be going bad thats sounds like exactly what's happening to mine. It might not sound too bad right now, but will progressively worse. I know, I'm waiting for my part to come in. I suggest change the rear diff fluid, if it look silvery thats not good. Thats metal. If it is ...bad news, a new unit (entire pumpkin) is 2200, but you can get a used one between 350-700. Good luck..

A bushing problem are usually clunks going over bumps. Bad tranny mounts usually are clunck when you shift from park to drive.

 

what about a loud clunk comming from Rear of car diff area when shifting manual gears at high rpms.

Rear end sloppy moving left and right. Only happens under Excelleration

Happening on 93 sc300 NA -6spd. (Miles 245K) Noticable everytime you hit the gas semi hard. Rear of car immediately feels like it sloshes to the right then to the left as power transfers, side to side the rear wheel must still be going straight. Only evens out when you let off the gas. Happens at low speeds and highs even scarier.

 

Thanks much for the reply - have changed rear end fluid on a regular basis - last was about a month ago and fluid was clear, so keeping fingers crossed diff is OK. Will try tranny mount - sounds like it is a good thing to change in and of itself to keep drivetrain vibration to a minimum.

 

its the diff i just changed mine cause of the same sound it only gets worst if you dont change it now find gazi he helped me out wit a sc400 diff and im enjoying it
