Im not sure how you had problems tuning around vtec since it is to be set at the point where power starts to drop (torque curve) on the smaller cam lobes as the revs rise. Either way if you dont have a good deal of experience tuning different systems (aem, megasquirt, haltec etc.) on different motors i would suggest staying away from vvti because it makes much more headaches than not, speaking from experience.

Megasquirt II can now control vvti . If I were you, I would get the vvti, much better torque curve and response imho.

VVTi FTMFW!!! (*cough* excuse the language *cough*)

Advantages: Quicker spool-up, more torque at lower RPM's, better fuel economy (don't know how much attention I'd pay to that).

Disadvantages: Not alot of people have tuned it, engine comes with weaker rods compared to the NON-VVTi.

If you do go with a 2JZ-GTE VVTi I suggest you pickup a Power Enterprise Camcon (Fuel & VVTi controller), and if you're willing to go with a LARGE single someday then look up Headworks (on supraforums) who should be able to regrind your stock cams for a much more "aggresive lift/duration".

Also for aftermarket standalone tuning the AEM doesn't work properly with VVTi, so the other option you've got is a HKS FCON V-Pro, paired up with a HKS Valcon controller would prove to be ideal.

I've got the 2JZ-GTE VVTi and even with the "disadvantages" listed above I'm still keeping it, and when I go single, will do EVERYTHING I can to retain VVTi.

Imagine a 3.4L Stroked 2JZ-GTE VVTi ...the spoolup on a large single would be VERY NICE!

skeet, I see you've done your research . Not many ppl in the States using the Camcon or Valcon, as for AEM I used it to ctrl all else, but the vvt-i was still operated by the factory ECU, you can make all the streetable pwr you need with this configuration. Definitely more headaches, but the benefits in driveability and spooling are a nice reward for the additional patience required.
