A simple filter won't do anything whatsoever for the smell. You'll just have particle-free nasty smelling air.

More than likely what has happened is the A/C has been run on recirc. most of its life, which traps moisture in the lines. This moisture grows mold, which causes the nasty smell. You can do one of two things - have the A/C system completely flushed and have a special mold-killing chemical run through it, or you can live with the smell.

i notice my car smells nice and fresh all the time when recirc is on. but sometimes i can get the smell of exterior odors even on recirc. like exhaust or passing by a landfill etc

why would that happen 95% of the time the car smells super fresh inside

you'd be surprised how much a clean filter helps... due to it's location, the cabin air filters found in some cars get very mildewy themselves...

Mine smells funky, too. Its not a mildew smell, though, I dont think. Just kind of funky, I dont know if I could compare it to anything. The car has never been smoked in.

Simple temporary solution. I bought a 1/4 bag of coffee, any flavor, rather smell , and put packets all around the cabin of my car. Make sure the coffee is not ground, but whole. The smell of coffee overpowers the nasty smell and your car smells good for about a month +.

hello cant help noticing i got the smell too im an ac tech try deoderizing the car and running the a/c 15 minutes every time you run the car even in the winter, that smell is probably mildew you may need to co to an ac supply store and ask for the chemicals that u need to clean the ac duct work that has been in layup for the winter i think these are the same chemicals that prevent legionaires disease, if you run the ac everytime you enter the car even in the winter you lube the shaft seals and prevent leakage of the ac fluid(freon ) as well as prevednting moisture to build up pproviding you use the car on a daily basis

Spray some Lysol disinfectant spray in the intake ducts (for cabin air) under the hood while the a/c is on. After a few treatments your smell will be reduced or gone.

I have 92 SC300 and I did manage to fit an air filter in... cabin filter... I think it was for GS300... Had to do some mod to fit in... but I guess, sometimes, I hear something is touching my filter (sounds like fan is touching the filter)...

Well, It does not remove smell but at least it feels good knowing that now I HAVE AIR FILTER...

the smell is from moisture being trapped in the system and growing mold.

you gotta clean it out to get rid of the smell.
