Replacing Power Steering Pump seals & O rings
Has anyone done this or seen it done?
I am going to try changing the O rings and seals that Toyota sell as a complete kit.
How difficult is it to take the pulley off? What about the oil seal, how did you pop it out without the special tool?
Please give me as much information as you can.
Thanks in advance,

Is your P/S just leaking or is it making that whining sound? My pump is starting to make the whining now. Plus it is loosing more fluid, I have to check it and add fluid quite regularily.
Will the reseal kit stop the whining once the complete? Also how do you get the air bubbles out of the line? I have a lot of air bubbles in the fluid when I check it... Truly trying to avoid the replacement...
How can you tell when you need the hose?

Do you have the parts #? I want to go to my local toyota dealer tomorrow and see if they can sell me the reseal kit cheaper than the lexus dealer.

Yes, I think your PS is leaking. My white SC is leaking also; I saw it on Sat. when I change the engine oil then I saw the oil below the pump, you can't see it leaks from the hood because it so little. My green SC on the other hand A LOT.
No I don't know if the pump kit will fix the leak but what the hay it only $25 instead of ~$450 for the high pressure hose and $300-$400 for the pump. I want to try the cheaper route first

MrGQ,
I don't have the part no. right now with me. The price I quote is buying from Carson Toyota of Los Angeles, since you're from CA you may have to pay tax...
Carson Toyota (800) 908-6968 Ask for Steve Ganz first he's a forum member. Steve been busy lately I haven't been able to talk to him directly. Gordon Miguel is the second guy to call. Gordon some time gave me off the wall price too so be careful on other parts like the MAF sensor, O2 sensors, high pressure hose and the pump. Shop around for the best price. Also post the price and the phone no. of the place for us to use...
So far most of my SC400 parts were bought from Carson Toyota, a few parts were from a dealer near DC (a friend of my brother) he sell about the same price plus tax. With Steve/Gordon I don't pay tax. I have to drive down to DC to pick it up while Steve or Gordon ship UPS (no charge) directly to my house, takes about more than a week each time.
Ikon,
Don't know about whining sound, since you need to add fluid your PS has a problem. I read somewhere it might be the flow control valve. Check the LS400 site where I ask about the PS pump problem. I think someone selling those flow control valve. From what I gather, Toyota has a few flow control valves for all their cars. A celica flow control valve works for the SC400 do I think a Camry would work too. Just have to the exact the code (A,B,C) on the valve.

I went to the a Lexus repair shop and they will rebuild the kit and give a 1 year warranty for parts and labor. The price is $240 plus tx. I may go with them, because the fluid is starting to leak on the alternator.(they showed it to me today on a lift.)
I will decide after I get the directions for the rebuild once I see the difficulty of the repair.

Try to be there when they rebuild the pump, See what kind of tools they use. It will help later on since these pump go out often. I can live with $240 for this job. Wish that I have that kind of price around here and time to let the dealer work on my car.
The record of my White SC400 showed that the pump was changed by the dealer back in late 1999. I saw some leak already
My SC300 seems to have a steering problem. Let me explain.
At slower speeds 0-50mph problem doesn't seem to be as bad as that of speeds increasingly faster than 50mph.
The problem is that the faster I drive, the more the steering tends to over-steer. Say I am drivinf down the highway at 75mph, and steering slightly left or right to change lanes, as trun the wheel back to straigthen the car out it either doesn't respond right away, or it steers a little in the opposite direction, almost as thought I over-steered.
It almost feels like one of those poorly designed racing sim computer games where when you steer, there is a delayed reaction, and you tend to counter steer to correct it.
It freaks me out a little since the faster you drive the more noticeable it gets.
Also, if there is an imperfection in the road (of which we know there is lots), the front wheels like to follow the line of it be it a groove or whatever. I then have to correct the direction of the car slightly to get it back in line. Usually it is a very small change, like a degree or so, but it worries me that it could be something which may get worst and cause total loss of steering control of the car!!
Has anyone encountered this on a car before?
One last thing, apparently the car has that speed-sensitive steering ... something to do with that perhaps?
Looking forward to hearing from someone before I am forced to take it back to the shop ..... AGAIN!!!
Thanks.
Jason.

You better have it check out, never heard of it before
Nobody took their steering pump out at home?
You all paid the dealer to do this?
Who ever took it out before please let me know where are the other two bolts located, and how do I take the two side bolts out. I can see the front nut and bolt but can't figure out where are the other two bolts...

I replaced mine a while back-see my previous posts:
Power Steering Pump Seal Kit
Rebuilt pumps are also available from PartsAmerica.com and AutoZone.com for reasonable prices.
The pump brackets are mounted at about a 45 degree angle looking at the pump from the front. The outside bolt is higher. After you remove the airbox, overflow tank, pump reservoir and bracket, belt and pump pulley, and some type of vacuum valve on the passenger side of the motor, the side bolts can be removed. They are tough to see; you have to feel for them. I think they were 14mm. Then disconnect the high pressure hose and remove the two front bolts.

Thank you Lexcoupe94,
Did you replace all the O rings and the oil seal? The kit I bought has O rings of different size, I know that there are three that look alike but one goes to certain place and the other two to the other place.
What about the oil seal? did you replace that also? Did you have to use the special tool like the shop manual says?
Again thanks for your help.
