Default Getting ready to do her in...

Well, I may be doing her in. I love my SC400's lines and styling but the last 50k miles have been quite a terror. Im afraid to sneeze in it 'cause something will probably break and it'll cost me a grand at the dealer to get it fixed. Thus far, my replacement car of choice is a BMW 850ci manual 6 speed I found. Probably a much more expensive money pit under normal circumstances but a good buddy of mine has a Beemer repair shop and I'll get pretty good deals on repairs.

Well I hate to break it to ya but if you think the SC is unreliable..... have a WONDERFUL time with that 850! I do love them but discount or not, those parts will rack up a massive bill! just be careful.

1.) stop taking it to the dealership
2.) problem solved

seriously, take it to a shop you trust and youll save a ton of $$$, they arent branded "stealerships" for nothing. And what the other guy mentioned, if you think your having problems with the SC, good luck with the 850, id love to have an 850, but not because i think id end up saving money by replacing the SC with it.

I was going to say the same thing. Have your mechanic friend give you deals repairing the Lexus.

I used to help keep up on the maintenance of an 850 my old boss used to own. The radiator blew up, and to get a replacement and install it was over 800 bucks... and I checked on parts prices. The radiator itself was 500 and you had to remove half the front end to replace it.

Please dont take offence to this.....

If you are calling an SC400 a 'money pit', you're in for a WORLD of hurt thinking about an 850ci. its one of the LAST cars you want if you're looking for sumthing reliable or an easy fix...and a 6spd at that??

It doesnt matter if you have a mechanic hook up or even get dealer pricing on parts. A grand is NOTHING (and EXPECTED without complaining) when you own one of these cars. I think I spent around 1k just to get new oem plugs and wires installed at my last inspection.

These two cars dont compare on any level when it comes to repairs or trying to maintain them. Both are nice cars, but are apples and oranges...

The 8 has to be taken to the dealer to maintain proper records. I negotiated 12k (9k cash) from the asking price of my first one, because the car was worked on by a Euro car repair shop and not the Dealer. I wouldve walked away if I heard that he did his own repairs...I dont care who he was. No Dealer stamp in the book = BIG DISCOUNT

the cars become worthless when they have no papers...It's kinda like selling pure breed dogs ya know?

The Lexus is a FAR more reliable car vs. the 850...its not even close. The 8 WILL break down no matter how well you treat it. One of mine has under 50k on the clock and was a little over a year old back when I bought it...but the money I spend to maintain them yearly ....

If someone offered me a perfect Ferrari Enzo for 100k , I wouldnt buy it. I'd ***** about maintaining a million $$ car that I got for cheap....Because I'd find out that buying it wasnt even half the battle

again, I dont know what your financial situation is and I mean no offence Sir, but I think the 8'er is a mistake if youre complaining about maintaining an older Lexus.

The 8 series IS a money pit and owners know this before entering into it. They are enthusiast cars....period.

I would LOVE to have another 8 owner to chat with about them...but not 'horror stories' . If you own one, there should be no complaints about how much it costs...only how often it costs you.

EDITED

I agree with Em.
Do not buy it as a daily and think its cakewalk.
BMW's are great cars to own, just understand that it comes with a premium.
And no papers/proper maintenance = trouble for you now or later.

I still will get an e31 8 series - its on my to-do list.
