there have been some posts concerning this further down but ill explain anyways b/c it not difficult too.
ECT switch changes the way your car shifts. It makes the car downshift more frequently and smoother. It also makes some other changes to the gears (more sportier ratio mabye...not sure on this one) that make the car have a sportier feel. However, it does use more fuel, but oh well.
Most people here always drive w/ it on, but i don't when i am behind a slow driver and can't pass, in a neighborhood (u dont need it on to go 15 over), driving in downtown traffic (dont usually go downtown though), but every other time i have it on. When racing, turn it on and TRAC off (if u have TRAC). Hope this helps.

1) can you explain the whole downshift thing? When u want to go fast, and the car downshifts, the RPMs go near/into the red band (max power). Therefore, u speed up b/c if ur RPMs were low (1-2 band), then u wouldn't go fast. This is y many people prefer to have a M/T over an A/T b/c u control where ur RPMs stay. Of course, when u slam on the brakes, the car downshifts, but it slows b/c of the brakes.
How to apply when driving: While driving w/ ECT on and RPM around 3-4, slam the gas pedal down to the floor. When u think that the pedal is to the floor, press a lil harder and u will notice that the pedal pushes this "thing" down. I'm not quite sure what it is, but i push it down anyway. Then u will notice that ur car speeds up and the RPM's near the redline.

2) why does traction control slow you down?
TRAC applies the brakes to the wheel(s) w/ the least traction. Therefore, when u r racing from a dead stop, if u have TRAC on and u have a lil tire slip, ur brake(s) will kick in, therefore slowing u down. A lot of tire slip is not good, but a lil squeak from the tires is fine.

Also, to go faster, turn off ur A/C. U will notice a 5+ mph increase when it is off. To see if this is true, get going around 90-100 w/it on, and then turn it off.

Jason......don't call urself a dumbass man. When i 1st figured out that ECT downshifted and all, i was like y the f$*# would u want to downshift, cause i only downshifted in my dads 5 spd Celica GTS when i was lsowing down. But then i figured it all out. Just read through the old threads and u will learn a lot of stuff. Thats how i did it.
