this happens only when i start the car after sitting for a while(cold start). it sounds like rod knock. I notice my oil pressue light flicker on when this happen upon starting. It flickers for about 2-3 seconds and than never comes back on during a drive. Do i need to replace my oil pump or is my engine on the way out. i hope not I have a 98 sc300 with just over 75k miles.
thanks in advance
yes i did check my fluid level. i think the problem is once the oil drains from the motor it is taking to long to gain pressure and relubricate. has anyone one ever heard or had a problem like this?
Thanks
Loose clearances in the rod bearings will cause a noise like this. They will rattle like hell until the oil pressure comes up and takes over. You may have another issue however.
Causes for something like this could be running the car without oil, improper crank/rod bearing clearances, dirty oil, extended oil changes, overheating or a faulty oil pump.
It's very odd it would happen to a car with such low mileage. What grade oil are you using currently? What oil filter are you running?
The noise could be other things. I cannot confirm what it is without hearing it myself. If it is in fact a rod knock at startup due to worn bearings, you may have a potentially serious situation. Whatever it is, longer you wait, the worse it will be.
