yeah the LCD is "drying out". On hot days it will melt and come back but once the AC comes on it goes back to black.

As a small tip, the more "above" the unit you get, the less you can see, try (for those who's is not completely gone) viewing it from a lower angle (um... not while driving) and you will see much more information on the screen

No, a new unit. The only screens in production for the Lexus are the LS models since they were carried over. The Sc screens stopped being produced LONG ago.

wow that really sucks. so that means you gotta drop a couple beans if you care about the look. what is the expected life span of the lcd screen? and does it only happen to the climate screen?

The far right side of my display went out after having an aftermarket stereo installed. I hit the screen with my fingers and it lit back up. It has went out about three times since then, but all I have to do is hit the screen directly and I am good to go for another month. Just beat it into submission

Default Climate LCD Replacement

I am an electronics tech.
These LCD's can be easily replaced.
All you need is a desoldering sucker and about 20 Minutes.

Problem is finding the correct size replacement screen.

If someone had and extra unit that was burned out they could desolder and take out the LCD, they may find a manufactures name and a parts number on the Screen unit. I bet one of the LCD Manufacturers would be able to supply a replacement unit.

Then a parts # could be established and posted here for ordering the replacement.

If mine ever gives up I will do this.

i was lucky enough to find a working one at a junk yard for 26 bucks the other day. mine was 1/2 black. so, now the only problem is, it doesn't light up. works great during the day, but at night time, i still can't see crap. lexus doesn't even carry the bulbs for the LCD so it sucks. any idea where those bulbs can be found?

Default Climate LCD Info

The backlight bulbs can be found at most good electronics shops.
They a 8 Volt bulbs.
35Ma

Here is a little info on LCD's

It is a C&P from an LCD Manufacturer.

Tech Support- Handling LCD
Liquid Crystal Display(LCD)

A LCD is made up of glass, organic sealant, organic fluid and polymer based polarizers. The following precautions should be taken when handling:

Keep the temperature within range for use and storage. Excessive temperature and humidity could cause polarization degradation, polarizer peel-off or bubble generation. When storage for a long period over 40ˇăC is required, the relative humidity should be kept below 60%.
Do not contact the exposed polarizers with anything harder than an HB pencil. To clean dust off the display surface, wipe gently with cotton, chamois or other soft material soaked in petroleum benzine. Never scrub hard.
Wipe off saliva or water drops immediately. Contact with water over a long period of time may cause polarizer deformation or color fading, while an active LCD with water condensation on its surface will cause corrosion of ITO elctrodes.
Petroleum Benzine is recommended to remove adhesives used to attach front/rear polarizer and reflectors, while chemicals like acetone, toluene, ethanol and isopropyl alcohol will cause damage to the polarizer. Avoid oil and fats. Avoid lacquer and epoxies which might contain solvents and hardeners to cause electrode erosion. Some solvents will also soften the epoxy covering the pins and thereby weaken the adhesion of the epoxy on glass. This will cause the exposed electrodes to erode electro-chemically when operating in high humidity and condensing environment.
Glass can be easily chipped or cracked from rough handling, especially at corners and edges.
Do not drive LCD with DC voltage. It will damage the LCD.
When soldering DIL pins, avoid excessive heat and keep soldering temperature between 260ˇăC and 300ˇăC for no more than 5 seconds.
Operation

The viewing angle can be adjusted by varying the LCD driving voltage.
Driving voltage should be kept within specified range, excess voltage shortens display life.
Response time increases with decerase in temperature.
Display may turn black or dark blue at temperatures above its operating range, however, this is not destructive and the display will return to normal once the temperature falls back to range.
Mechanical disturbance during operation (such as pressing on the viewing area) may cause the segments to appear "fractured". They will recover once the display is turned off.
Condensation at terminals will cause malfunction and possible electro-chemical reaction. Relative humidity of the environment should therefore be kept below 60%.
Storage

Store LCDs and modules in dark places and do not expose to sunlight or fluorescent light. Keep the temperature between 0ˇăC to 35ˇăC and the relative humidity low.
Modules should be kept in antistatic packaging. If properly sealed, there is no need for desiccant.
Safety

If any fluid leaks out of a damaged glass cell, wash off with soap and water any human part that comes into contact with the fluid. Never swallow the fluid. The toxicity is extremely low but caution should be exercised at all times.
