I have been trying to find a way to reduce the height of out unsightly shifter. I recently put on my trust shift **** hoping that it would reduce the height, but instead it looks like a slot machine handle. Have any of you guys tried to dremel it and rethread the shifter? I have done it on my honda a while ago and it worked fine... but just a little hesitant on our SC's

 

trd makes a short shifter.... kinda expensive though. i wouldnt cut it if i were you. i got an ebay generic short shifter for my old SC a while ago, but it snappen in half. if your gonna do anything, i would reccomend getting the trd. im happy with my trd **** by itself. (thanks chris). i think it sits a bit lower than the stock one, but cant be sure.

 

I have a custom short shifter. Never installed it. Its a stock mkiv 5sp shifter cut and rewelded with a new bushing. I don't know if I'll get around to trying it any time soon. I'll let it go for what I paid for it. Otherwise, the TRD short throw for the mkiv 5 spd should work trick...

 

i have a cut and weld shifter also. Im loving it. I dont think id ever be able to go back to stock. the only thing i worry about is it breaking.

Dont forget the TRD shifter will only work in i think 94 or 95+ cars because they went to the updated w58 so anything prior to that is a no go. I think there was someone in the NA section of supraforums that sucessfully used an mkiii short shifter but i stopped following the thread so i cant be 100% sure but the shifters looked identical.

 

well the thing is that i have a R154 tranny and I believe the shifter was taken from my W58 and fitted on the R154. For those of you who have the TRD shifter, do you mind showing some pix?

 

wouldn't a short shifter for an IS300 work on the SC? I thought they both used the same tranny or are there differences in them?

 

the IS uses the W55 if i remember. I'm almost positive that TRD makes a short shifter for the R154. just do a google search.

 

yea TRD does make a short shifter for the r154. MVP has them. Only thing is that its $300....ouch!

Even i the R154 shoft shifter cost $3 it would be no help to us. ALL USDM SC3 5speeds have the W58 5speed tranny. The 95+ SCs have the updated version which are compatible with the TRD pull type shifter. However for us poor 92-94 guys, all we've got are the cut-and-weld shifters, OR this common MKIII supra mod: http://www.supras.com/04/resources/index.php?id=30 . This is commonly called the SOGI mod and I know many MKIII guys do it.

 

wait i think that was for the W58 then. Dont the NA Supras use W58's? Cause it was for a 93-98 NA Supra.

I'm not looking to reduce the shifter height signifigantly but more like an inch at most to close that gap between the shift **** and the shift boot.

 

yea I did that too on my old Accord but i didnt chase any threads. I just used another shift **** with 3 allen screws and worked out well. But the problem is that this will not shorten the shifts by much since the bottom shaft bellow the ball of the shifter is still the same. And thats what counts. Thats why cutting and welding is the only way to go unless I was right about TRD having a short shift kit for a W58, but then again 3 bills is a lot for just a short shifter.

 

the shift distance is ok with me. I just want to reduce the height of the stick... anyone think that the Tap and Die method would be fine?
