Default surprise find

I'm really thinking of getting another car. I'm keeping the sc and the es. Probably add a gs. Went to the dealership to look at the gs's. There were a couple but I couldn't keep my eyes off the 2 sc's they had. One was a 92 sc300 in mint condition in and out and under the hood. The odo said 56,000 miles but the engine had 2jz stamped on it. I thought the 92 was a 1jz. Car purred like a kitten. They want $14,000 for it. It's dark green with tan interior. Only problem was the drivers seat had been poorly re-done.

The other was a 97 sc300 with 58,000 miles on it. They want $17,560 for it. I test drove it and was within an inch of buying it. Here's why I didn't. You could see it had been in an accident. Let me reprase...I could see it had been in an accident. Most people can't tell. The front bumper was just a little darker shade. Add to that the air bag had been deployed and the cover they used as a replacement didn't match the color of the dash. Looks tacky. Also, the a/c was not cold. Ran the car 30 minutes and it never got cold. I still almost got it because they will fix the a/c. They wouldn't guarantee they would repaint the bumper and change the air bag cover...although I'm kinda sure I can talk them into it.

Guess I'm just concerned what else could be wrong after having a major collision...small collisions don't usually cause the airbag to deploy. It looks pretty good though. Red on tan interior.

reggiek, did you run a car fax to see if it really was in an accident. They should have run a report for you while you were there. Although just cause it doens't show on that report doesn't mean one didn't happen.

You got a good eye, most buyers wouldn't see that stuff, although I would catch the diff in color of wheel cover. That leads me to think why would they take a trade in on a car that was damaged? I always thought that the dealers stayed away from cars that were in accidents & wouldn't take them.

the SC300 always had the 2JZ-GE in 1998 I believe it changed to a VVTi version of the 2JZ-GE

the 1JZ-GTE is only found in the Soarer 2.5 TT

Sorry, the first one was a 92, I've already edited correctly.

Footnote...I got a message from the salesman. Offering me the 97 in the low 15's if I'm really serious. I've bought 2 cars from this dealer. This is very surprising to me. There must be more wrong than I thought. They don't ususally bargain too far down when they have a sure fire gem. I went by to discuss it but decided not to even get out of the car. If this was right, there would be no hesitation. I'll wait a liitle longer. I'd rather have a 98 anyway. The 97 felt exactly like my 95. In fact my muffler sounds better. I'll wait til I find a vvti 98 or get a gs.

Well I dont know about the off color of the bumper and steering wheel cover, but the AC could just be low on freon (however that is spelt). My SC wasnt putting out anything cold at all, just alot of room temp air, as if it was a fan. So took it to dealership and they said it was a pound and a half low on that stuff. Now I dont know how much it should have, but boy did that make a difference, now its almost always too cold (which in Houston is never a bad thing).

Better safe than sorry. If you had bought it, you may have regretted it for the rest of your owning it. Way to pass it up, I know how hard that can be sometimes. . .
