Default R-154 Automatic Tranny Problems

Well, since I've got my hands on the car, i noticed it took a few seconds to engage reverse (longer than mornal) and i couldnt floor the car b/c the rpm went str8 to redline and i didnt get no where. Now, my reverse is totally out, and my forward gears are slipping. My RPM at 50MPH is 3K. My O/D light also flashes after i drive it for about 2 blocks. Does anyone have any idea whats going on?

Damn, sound like your automatic tranny is done, especially if it's one of those custom R154 automatics.

LOL @ Clint

just for the record:
the R154 is the manual tranny that was offered with the 1jz or 7m-gte motors... its not an automatic...

Hehe, I'm a proud owner of an R154 in my Supra... quick question though.. can I use the JZA70 bellhousing to use an R154 in the SC300? I know it is mechanically sound, but does it physically fit and does it place the shifter in the correct position?

Long as your Supra has a 1JZGTE, I'm pretty sure it'll bolt up to the 2JZGE in the SC300.

Now for the shifter location.... Depends...

the Supra R154 has its shifter housing slightly forward of the Soarer R154. So I suspect even a Supra R154 + Soarer shifter would have the shifter an inch or two too far foward. The Supra shifter will not work at all - it is way too far forward. You would likely need to get a Soarer shifter and extend it, or do some major work to the Supra shifter, or have a custom one made.

If I use a Soarer R154, is it safe to assume that it's plug and play on the US body?

Best guess? I'd say so.

Soarer R154 + Soarer shifter, I would give that a damn good chance of working for you. The Soarer R154 will be super hard to find and hella expensive. On the other hand, you can get a Supra R154 for very little, buy the Soarer bellhousing from your Toyota dealer.. I'd say maybe $300? And then have a shifter made, basing it on the Supra shifter. Shouldn't be too hard for someone who knows what they are doing. That's the way I'd go. I've got a Supra 154 in my garage now, waiting to go into my V8 Soarer (SC400)...

What is the difference between the Soarer JZZ30 R154 bellhousing and the Supra JZA70 R154 bellhousing? I have a few JZA70 bellhousings lying around, although $300 new for the Soarer one is a good deal.

Wink

300 is my guess as it's about 500 australian here. I don't know the difference, but if you have a R154->xJZ bellhousing, I'd use it. A custom short shifter will set you back less than 300 if you design it yourself and take it to a machinist with a CNC lathe.

I can't imagine Toyota really making 2 different R154/1JZGTE bellhousings. I would imagine they would share most of the same components for the clutch too. If I was an engineer at Toyota, and someone wanted an old engine/box combo fitted to a longer chassis (ie Mk3 Supra 154-1JZ into the Mk3 Soarer/Mk4 Supra chassis), and the box needed to be a bit longer, I wouldn't add length to the bellhousing. I'd add it in the shifter and the shifter housing..... and those two parts, I know, happen to be longer for the 30Soarer/40Supra chassis...... just a hunch, but hey.. I'm just some guy hitting keys halfway across the world.... I wouldn't believe me!!
