Default sc400 trunk will not open

A buddy just purchased an sc400 and cannot open his trunk,... The key turns but does not activate the lock and the valet switch inside is damaged... I told him I would post this to see if any of you have ideas.
I didn't believe that a damage valet switch would prevent the trunk from opening with the key but you never know... That is what he was told when car was purchased from an auction... (i know what your thinking..auction=problem car... i agree....lol)
Any ideas?

the existing posts deal with gas struts etc... The most recent posts dealt with a faulty valet switch but none I found talk about a trunks inability to be opened inside or out. I am refering to the locking mechanism not the trunk lid raising...

Is it possible the key he has is a valet key? On older SCs the full and valet keys are both full size with real looking heads. A lexus dealer (or our group buy key folks) should be able to tell and provide a fully functioning key. That may also be why the interior lock isn't working. It takes the real deal key to open it.

if that is the case and he only has the valet key... would that mean that he cannot open the trunk or use the interior valet switch (although his is damaged)..?
I didn't realize that the valet key only opens doors and starts the car ...

No, he would not be able to open the trunk.

A quick test for this is (as I remember... it's been awhile since I've had an SC).. it to check the dash console in the passenger seat. I believe it has a locking mechanism and either it won't open with the valey key in the ignition or you won't be able to lock/unlock it with the key.

Give it a try.. I may be wrong.

Just to restate what was said before pretty much...

The valet key cannot open the glove compartment, the trunk, and cannot unlock the Trunk and Gas Lock that is located to the left and down from your steering wheel.

For my year, 1994,
The valet key looks like this:

Whereas the master key looks like this:

The Master key for my 96 SC looks nothing like that. It has a separate fob and no screws or push buttons at all on the key.

I think the change was in 95 or so because my friend's 93 LS looks like that and my 96 looks like how you described.
