How did the rear end and shafts work out? Pumpkin bolt right in there? Did you use TT outputs? Custom drive shaft?

awj, I used the driver side axle shaft from a 6spd supra tt. There is a VERY minor difference in length, and I didn't want to take any chances. As for the drive shaft, I had Toyomoto lengthen a stock 6spd supra driveshaft to fit the car. I'll see how I like it first, before I flip the bill for a custom one piece.
As for the diff, it did bolt right in.

Thanks for the info. Good luck with that thing. Should be a real killer next time out.

here are my totals for the 6spd swap

6spd $2k
clutch rps stage 3 $600
new stock tt flywheel $400
6spd differential $800
tt driveshaft (fabricated by Toyomoto) $500

rscott, I'm not positive on using the stock 5spd ecu. I was using a supra tt 6spd ecu because I did the motor swap. As for the tach, the trans won't make a difference. It's driven off of a magnetic pick up on the motor.
Maybe someone else can respond on the speedo. I'm not 100% on how our cars read the VSS (vehicle speed sensor).

...our cars read VSS off of a pickup sensor on the tailshaft housing on the transmission. As long as you use the 6spd rear end, i believe the speedo will be right on with no correction. But if you use an AUTO TT rear end instead, you will need an electronic device to alter the signal from the sensor to the ECU.

Here is a "yellow box" which alters the signal sent to the ecu.

ok, so before you were using a supra TT exu with the 5-speed? so the w58 will bolt up to the GTE? Man all this conflicting info....

The only reason I am concerned is because a friend of mine recently bought two wrecked MKIV TT's one was wrecked from the front and the other from the rear, and he is going to use the front panels off of one to work on the other to make 1 good car. He will have a spare motor (but no trans) and has offered it to me for a good price. I just need to know if the GTE will bolt up to the W58 or if I have to track down a getrag..

Keith,

To clarify everything for you.
The w58 will absolutely bolt up to the GTE block. I put down 400+rwhp through it and ran a 12.6 ET when I had it in the car. It will hold a good amount of power, but once you get over that 400+rwhp, the tranny's chances of survival decrease pretty quickly. Unless you just drive casually all the time

Let me know if you have any other questions

oh thank god! Man I thought I was going to have to plunk down an extra $2k to get the dang getrag for my car. Most likely we will be keeping the stock twins until they die, and only some BPU's. I want to limit output to about 400 or so whp, because I can't have my wife's car being too much faster than my own car

I figure it will hold up well because my wife drives the car much nicer than I do. Thanks Chris!!!

Let me know if for some reason you want to sell that GTE motor

i think one of the more popular setups soon will be the R154 install from the mkiii turbo supra; its built pretty tough; and with a automatic MKIV LSD it would work quite well

here's the breakdown as far as parts:
R154 tranny
1jz manual tranny bellhousing
1jz (or 2jz?) flywheel
2jz clutch plate
7m-gte clutch disc
driveshaft

if anyone has done the swap or has seen a post on some website outlining it; please post it up

R154 tranny uses 1 jz flywheel and belhousing and 7m supra clutch and pressure plate.
