I have 1998 lexus sc400 with 202k miles listed for sale. Asking 6k, so far haven't had any serious buyers. I'm think about junking/parting out this car if is doesn't sell by the end of this month. Owned it for 5 year and the ownership experience has been terrible. Something is always breaking on this car and I've felt like I've dumped enough $$$ into this car. I have no desire to keep this car anymore, any thoughts?
Selling vehicles and things like stereo equipment is increasingly no fun, as more and more people go to the mobile, consumable lifestyle and don't value the bigger niceties. Anything I put up for sale, I find it's taking longer and longer to find serious buyers.
The big exception is stuff listed nationally on sites like eBay. Eliminating the local window shoppers is the key. I doubt you have anywhere near $6k in part-out value there, not without a ton of work at least, so it seems to me you'd be better off testing the eBay waters (probably nowhere near good enough condition for something like BaT) and taking the 13% hit on fees.
Yep, as t2d2 said it's such a painstaking process to sell something especially like this. But hopefully it goes well! I've been running into a lot more people lately who are interested in buying my car or buying an SC in general. Might be worth a drive to a busier area with a for sale sign.
If you do end up junking it though, can I call dibs on your interior window door trims (the part with the tweeter speakers) if they aren't cracked? I've been trying to find a pair 😅
98+ 400s are a treat. What issues does it currently have? Would it make a drive back to texas or have to be shipped?
I'd definitely be interested in taking it on as a project before you junk/part it out.
Put it up on FB marketplace and in the SC parts groups. Places like craigslist are completely dead. The millennial and younger crowd only looks to buy stuff off social media platforms. From what I have seen the past few years I feel the majority of younger people that make a FB is just for access to marketplace

That’s what I’ve noticed too! I kept wondering why there wasn’t as many cars posted for sale on Craigslist anymore. It turns out they're on the Facebook Marketplace now. I haven’t used my Facebook account in over a decade but I do browse the marketplace for cars, parts, and stuff.

Craigslist was losing a lot of traffic, then put a gigantic nail in their own coffin by charging for vehicle listings. Their usage completely dried up overnight. Classic internet story of misjudging free vs paid valuation.
Because you are selling a 98+ VVTI 400, you should have a lot more potential buyers on social media than someone trying to sell a 95-97 car. VVTI 400s are always in higher demand than the earlier cars
I lean toward it being legit, just a very frustrated owner. I felt in the first post, and now reinforced by the second post, that that negative attitude toward the car is probably spilling over when trying to sell it.
