Like most recommend I choose to run a synthetic ATF (old school red stuff, synthetic, nothing too fancy) as PS fluid in my SC and Tacoma.
I put Amsoil ATF into mine. A bit overkill but it was actually the least expensive option given my situationat the time. No issues, buttery smooth.

Any Dexron II/III/IV compatible ATF or Toyota's formulation of the same ATF.
DO NOT use conventional power steering fluid in these cars! Dexron II/III/IV compatible ATF only. Newer Dexron numbers go higher so it just has to say on the specification label that the formulation specifically covers the older style fluid.

Or... buy Toyota's older style ATF which is used for their older style power steering systems (mostly 1990's era models) that call for it.
