Been on this forum for years, personally have a 2019 ES with the 8 speed and haven't read much at all regarding early failures. Granted the 8 speed is not the smoothest and it's one of the reasons we decided to go with the 350h with the silky smooth eCVT when we traded my wife's 2017 RX.

Had a 2020 Highlander (same 8 speed?), the transmission started to make whining sound. The Toyota dealer replaced the torque converter and told me it has been fixed. Drove off the dealer lot, and the sound came back. Drove right back to the dealer. This time they replaced the transmission and all was fine.

My coworker has a 2017 Highlander - I think same 8 speed. In any event, he's still on the original trans fluid (and transfer case/rear diff) at 325K miles. But can you imagine his alternator just failed
