Default Lexus on a roll

With all the new technology especially infotainment system Lexus has introduced in the last few years amazing #1 in dependability and now 2025 just released initial quality. Last year initial quality #8. Dependability is surveying owners of three year old models and initial quality surveys owners at 90 days.

We've had this discussion on previous threads - I really don't know the metrics they use to determine "dependability". To me it only applies to issues that make the car undriveable, and stuff like that is few and far between on any new car. The other metric would be to count any and all warranty related issues, however small, that owners have to bring the cars in for. For example on my RX, the intermittent windshield wipers and that shifter error message and that other recall for that cam sensor I recall having done. But those don't make the car "undependable". To me, I am much more interested in the track record of the car after the warranty - what is the repair rate for issues once the warranty expires. My Mercedes after warranty had: Bad thermostat, bad sending sensor on the fuel tank, corroded brake fluid line, and some faulty electronic controller for the dome lights.

The one thing I will agree with on that list is Audi being near the bottom. They have horrible cooling systems - hoses, water pumps, etc. And the 2.0T burns oil and fouls the valves with carbon.

The J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study looks at the following:

I got one of those surveys. They said it was like 30 minutes to complete. I got halfway and then quit with the "are you still there" question. JDP is a self-selecting survey, non-random, and I trust it about as much as I trust politicians.

So you did not fill it out because it was to detailed and that is bad!!! Explain to us how they are self serving by randomly surveying owners. How are they non-random. So an internet search and see how they survey owners. Let Google be your friend.

I find it interesting that Toyota is way down on the list while Lexus is first.

Lexus use to be better than 1.66 problems per vehicle on average. This particular survey is not very useful any more. There use to be a lot more separation. So now we have Lexus with an average of almost 2 issues per vehicle (1.66) and most of the rest with an average closer to 2 issues per vehicle. Being number 1 or number 20 really does not matter much.

Let's look back 15 years. Lexus had 73 issues per 100, less than half of what it is today. I would guess the 12v battery issues are responsible for driving most of the decline along with consumers lack of understanding or poor implementation of complicated infotainment systems and digital keys.

Never taken a stats class I see. And the "detail" was a hodge-podge of irrelevant stuff. JDP is bought-and-paid reviews for mfgs.

That makes no sense to me either.

Only thing I can think is the Toyota V6 engine issue that created tons and tons issues.

That has to be the culprit.

My salesman a friend told me and it makes perfect sense Toyota tries new things out on Toyota before introducing to Lexus. Think about the things in the last few years that Toyota got first and a year or two was passed to Lexus. I am find with someone else being the guinea pig.

Then that's a swing and a miss on the new Lexus infotainment system. Should have never made it to Lexus production.

Yep it really doesn't work. I tried to have dancing girls jump out of the screen and into the cabin but no go The good news is the audio system works, AA and Carplay work well and all the car info I need (tire pressure etc) is easily accessible.

I'm hard pressed to think of a worse infotainment system that the one in our 23 RXh. At least Carplay and AA work - most of the time.
