Default Hatch Door Won’t Close

Anyone have any problems with the hatch door not closing? I have a 2023 RX350 - no problems with hatch until 2 months ago. Opening the hatch with key, foot kick or manually pushing the door button is consistent, but randomly won’t close and beeps twice. Nothing is in the way, I’m not standing too close, nothing identifiable that is preventing the door from closing. After taking it by the dealership today, I was told there was a small window of production that had a known problem and parts would be ordered. Just wanted to let y’all know if this becomes a problem. No technical service bulletin….yet.

If you are pushing the right hand side close and lock button it will beep as it is supposed to and you have to walk away from the car in order for the hatch to close and lock. Otherwise it will remain open. Pushing the left hand side button will simply close the hatch.

And you need to press the Close & Lock button as soon as you open it, for it to work.

I don't trust it either, I always feel weird about walking away with an open hatch. I always look back to verify.

I don't think you need to push the close and close button immediately after opening the hatch for it to work. You can press it any time after the hatch is already open. You just need to be standing underneath it when you push the button, it beeps and then you have like 30 seconds or so to walk away and then it closes. Mine works consistently but I do always turn around to make sure it actually closes and locks.

You just need to be standing underneath it when you push the button,
My (admittedly ancient) Muscle Memory would usually press the RH button AFTER I was ready to walk away.

That said, even after pressing the LH button, I look back to assure that the mirrors are folded, to assure that the car is locked.

Just curious… what is the advantage of the “walkway”feature?

Why not just tap the “close” button and be done with it? No second guessing and look backs.

Because just tapping the close button doesn't also lock the car. If the car is parked outside and you are unloading items and both hands will be full then you tap the close and lock button and walk away with both hands full and the hatch will close and then also lock the car for you. Otherwise you would have to find a way to lock the car with both hands full and occupied. It's a very useful feature and one I often use. There is really no need to look back and check anything. That's kind of like when most people press the lock button on the fob more than one time just to make sure the car is doubly tightly locked moreso than if you just pressed the lock button once. I think we've all done that lol.

It beeps twice no matter what button you push - the close or close/lock button. And no, it doesn’t close when walking away. The service manager says this is a known random issue (for a small production window) and will happen more frequently until the parts are exchanged.

That DOESN'T lock it.

If you want to learn all you can about the new RX then I highly recommend watching parts 1 and 2 of the Northside Lexus 2023-2035 Deep Dive Tutorial on YouTube. It is several hours long in total (4 hours and 15 minutes) but covers everything you need to know about the car, including this topic on the rear hatch close and lock feature.

Have developed the same issue with our 2020 RX. It’s intermittent with ours but seems more common with cold weather. Have taken it to dealership and they didn’t seem too surprised about it. I believe the actuators will need replacing at some point.
