Wind Damage: Expensive Repair Estimate.. Is This Normal?
I recently took a road trip in my 2024 Lexus RX350h and got caught in intense desert winds. The gusts kicked up sand, rocks, and debris, which bombarded the front of my car—including the windshield, hood, bumper, grille, side mirrors, and part of the roof near the windshield. I’ve attached some photos, though the damage is hard to capture on camera. The tiny white dots you see are hundreds of paint chips scattered across the front of the car. I’ve filed an insurance claim and received a repair estimate of around $19,000, covering parts and labor. The repair shop recommended replacing the hood, bumper, grille, headlights, windshield, and side mirrors, while the damaged section of the roof could be repaired. When I asked whether repainting was an option, they explained that it would actually be more expensive to paint than replace the parts. Does that sound reasonable? Replacing so many parts instead of repainting feels excessive, but I’m not familiar with car repairs.

WOW! Talk about "Revenge of the Haboob". That is a lot of paint damage. I would prefer new parts on a new car if it was me. Trying to fill holes with paint is never a good idea. Besides, this is a no-fault insurance claim. It does not seem ik you have paint protection film, right?
That's insane that replacing parts is easier than painting them. But I guess labor is less than painting. This is what I hate about modern cars - they look so nice, shape is nice but are not good at taking the abuse of daily life. Or they are but you would have to live with the paint damage. I miss the old metal bumpers and toughness of the 70's and 80's.
Even if this is a no-fault insurance claim, are we all sure it won't raise premiums in the future? Auto insurance has been out of control lately in most all states, not just CA.
Was you vehicle in motion or parked during this wind/dust storm?
I’m guessing in-motion since the damage occurred at the front. The forward motion compounded the wind speed. Still should be no-fault, in my opinion, but I doubt his insurance will confer with me.
Even if his premium goes up a bit, it’ll be a small fraction of the $19k.

Yes, no fault claim and I am located in CA so I got to believe my premiums will raise after this.
They are going to paint the new parts in any case. It seems like it would be a lot cheaper to prime/paint new parts than sand old parts to get smooth and then prime paint. Plus the base metal may be damaged by debris.
Before getting insurance involved, you should see what a really good detail shop may be able to do for you, maybe testing on just a section of the damaged area. There are some really amazing detail experts that can work some real miracles with paint.
Get other estimates, that number is crazy. One of the reasons why auto insurance has skyrocketed over the past 4 years, is that auto body shops quote seemingly unbounded prices - and insurers just pay them and pass the costs to the policy holders. It's rampant. Soon its going to be impossible for middle class people to even own private auto transportation, because the insurance costs are so high. The only drivers will be higher income people, and people who drive without insurance.

I've never seen anything like it, and the cost is insane no matter who's paying for it. If it wasn't a new car I would have tried compound and a power buffer.
