Default Low Coolant Levels

I just checked, both my radiator and intercooler coolant levels were at the low mark no lights or anything. I don't recall checking them when the car was new, but recently got oil changed at 5K mark so was checking the oil and noticed. What is strange how did the tech miss this as it even says on document check and fill all fluids. I really don't want go back to dealer as it bit of drive, assume I can go Toyota to buy coolant and fill? It for both tanks correct the pink?

I am curious how it would drop in that short of time, have had it for 7 months just over 5k on it. There is zero coolant anywhere. so don't think any leaks and it be odd both tanks are at the same level and their separate tanks. Maybe break in or maybe it was never filled correctly to max from factory. I just hope it isn't caused due to high temps these engines are running at. I do drive it very hard at time and at high speeds, but still shouldn't burn this stuff up this soon.

A possible explanation is that the engine was warm when you got the oil changed so that the levels were higher than the Min/Low lines. I tend to agree with you, that it probably wasn't properly filled from the factory and/or checked at the dealer pre-sale.

From the owner's manual for engine and intercooler;
"Engine coolant reservoir:
The coolant level is satisfactory if it is
between the “MAX”/“FULL” and
“MIN”/“LOW” lines on the reservoir
when the engine is cold.
If the level is on or below the “MIN” line,
add coolant up to the “MAX” line. "(Same for intercooler coolant.)

■Coolant selection
Only use “Toyota Super Long Life Coolant”
or a similar high quality ethylene glycol
based non-silicate, non-amine, non-nitrite,
and non-borate coolant with long-life
hybrid organic acid technology.
U.S.A.:
“Toyota Super Long Life Coolant” is a mixture of 50% coolant and 50% deionized
water. (Minimum temperature: -31°F
[-35°C])
Canada:
“Toyota Super Long Life Coolant” is a mixture of 55% coolant and 45% deionized
water. (Minimum temperature: -44°F
[-42°C])
For more details about coolant, contact
your Lexus dealer.

My fluid levels, as delivered, were right at Max for engine coolant and well above Full for the Power control unit coolant reservoir. The levels haven't moved in 2,800 miles.

The coolant will drop to the low mark when the engine is cold, more so when it gets cold out. When the engine is at operating temperature, the fluid should be at the full mark or close to it.
It sounds to me that you don't need to worry.
Toyota will have the correct fluid.

That was my initial thought too, from previous vehicles, but the owner's manual specifically calls out that, if the coolant level is on or below the low line while cold, it needs to be filled to max.

That is a 'safe' bit of advice. Coolant level at MAX on a cold fill will not cause an anxiety attack, it shouldn't overflow. And if the level drops a bit lower...NO HARM, NO FOUL. As long as it stays above MIN.

I have seen many new cars over the years that seem to lose coolant after a few months (especially as the weather gets colder). The probable cause is the release of air pockets as the engine runs and cycles between hot & cold. The same thing happens on older cars too, that have had engine cooling system(s) serviced.

Toyota and Lexus' 'pink' coolants are the same, no worries there either.

+++++++++++++

When we took possession of our RX500h former 'show car' at 3,000 miles, the coolant wasn't at MAX, but it was above MIN, so I didn't panic.
The window washer tank was pretty empty, though!

Mine has been very close to the low mark when cold since I got it near 6K ago.

Thanks all, went to Toyota today. Waited for engine to be cold, filled just shy to full line, it seems to be at good level now even after getting hot. We will see next 5K miles where it ends up.

*Update just shy of about 3 months and 3k miles since last top off of coolant for the intercooler and radiator.

The intercooler hasn't lost much, but the radiator is now down from Full level to middle level, This is checking when cold, and when I filled it was cold was at Full level. There is zero leaks as I had dealer check it which they said did pressure check bc I requested. They otherwise said it completely normal for it to consume coolant, which I don't understand. First time it went to below min was after 5k and 6 months and I assumed it was due to it being new and having air bubbles etc. Now I just don't understand there zero coolant color in oil and all check outs. However in looking at new RX and some customer cars they were low as well which I find strange. I am thinking it just may be something with the set up of this engine as don't think it is season related as had it in summer and cold months now.

I've never heard of any car "consuming" coolant.

My understanding is that the colder it gets, the lower the coolant gets, and vice-versa. Could that be a factor?

I don't think so because it occurred in warm months as well. I posted it here because I wanted to see if others checked after 5K miles if they saw it drop from being new.
My Audi I am not sure if burning/consume is correct, but it had gone to Min level once then when I filled it up, but it yet to ever go back down that shortly. So wasn't sure if it has do with turbo set up and engine that runs very hot.

O well it could be worse!
