Tuesday, I drove 100 miles to a specialist doctor. On the way there, I never heard anything hit my windshield. I parked & put my sunshade up. The car was parked in the middle of a hospital lot, with no construction or mowing anywhere nearby. An hour later, I came out & as soon as took the sunshade down, I saw a one foot long horizontal crack! Now, it’s about two feet long. I called my insurance & they gave me their recommended glass shop’s name, so I went there yesterday. The cost to replace this stupid windshield is over $1300!!! The glass shop said the two black trim pieces must be replaced also at $70 each. I don’t have all the safety equipment, just rain sensing wipers. I have owned many cars & trucks & I have NEVER had a windshield break like this. I’ve been hit with Golfball sized rocks that never cracked a windshield. I’ve even had one that looked like a bullet hit it, but it never cracked. This has a teenie tiny rock chip about an inch from the edge. Even the glass shop thought this was weird with that small of a rock chip. Has anyone else had this happen? Is this the nature of this acoustic glass?
Happens more often that you'd know. I recently had to replace the windshield in my Azera due to a small stone chip that then spread. Hopefully you have full glass coverage.
this happened to me too! some day last June, I heard a sharp loud sound when I was driving pass a under construction road. I didn't know what was the sound came from. I pulled over check around, everything was fine. but the second day morning, I saw the cracked windshield, it's more serious than yours. I brought the car to glassshop, they said it will be about 2200cad (including fix a very tiny dent on roof edge caused by same rock). I paid 100 and insurance take care the rest.

It was under $1,000 but -0- to me, no auto wipers, cruise control camera etc so I guess those options escalate the replacement cost in our RX models.
I’d also push to get it replaced at the dealership where you can ensure it is OEM glass you’re getting. Aftermarket glass does not play well with the rain sensing wiper system.

Sorry, you have had the worst luck. Windshields are more expensive than ever. Make sure th shop is using Lexus glass at those prices. We are lucky here, in Florida, as the insurance company has to replace at no charge. I am sure we are paying extra for this, my VP’s company Explorer windshield cracked and it was near $1400 from the dealer.
That’s a total bummer! Did it start from one edge? If so, there was probably a chip from a prior impact that finally cracked. I had to replace the windshield 3 times on my 2013 ES- luckily was able to get OEM glass every time.

Yes, the chip is about 1” from the side molding, but it cracked towards the middle of the car. I’m beginning to think the problem may be the OEM glass. The Lexus dealer quoted me $1379 installed. If you went thru 3 windshields on your ES, it may not be worth doing OEM...just saying.

Considering that cracked windshield claims have to be among the most common comprehensive claims, I would hope that any policy that excludes windshields comes with a very low premium.

In almost all of them, there are people who post saying that they got a non-OEM replacement windshield and that there were problems with automatic wipers or other features. Thus, I would suggest that the OP spend any extra money required to get an OEM windshield.

I think it's driven by your deductible but perhaps I'm mistaken. I know mine was covered.

Every state has different insurance laws & for most part, insurance is a ripoff for what you get. They have almost sidestepped the very reason we have insurance. I’ll stop there, before this borders on political

The last cracked windshield I had looked very similar to yours ... a tiny chip near the edge caused by rock kicked up by a car in the lane to the right resulting in a crack that spread to at least two feet long within a few days. Broken windshields are one of the reasons we carry a zero deductible on comprehensive coverage - that and running over deer carcass, hitting flying crap fallen from trucks and replacing countless stolen Mercedes hood ornaments. (The last "flying crap" incident damaged about 20 cars and did $5,000 damage to my LS.)
I remember "Click & Clack" on "Car Talk" once discussing about how much more damage prone modern, thin, weight-saving windshields are. Maybe my memory is failing but I don't remember people replacing cracked windshields in the 1950's and 1960's unless something really huge struck them .... such as a deer or a thrown brick!
The "last cracked windshield" I mentioned was acoustic with attached rain sensor and forward facing camera on the 2014 Sienna Limited I like to call our "Adult Size RX". (Yes, that's a dig at there not being a 3-row RX.) The replacement was OEM with exactly the same markings as the original including the word "ACOUSTIC" inscribed on the driver side. There was no argument from my insurer about using OEM since an acoustic windshield was not available in the aftermarket.
BTW, I'm retired from a well known insurance company ... not the one with the cute lizard.
