I have a 2021 Lexus RX350L that I lost one of my fobs, want to get a replacement. Its type of key that I can leave in pocket, not sure what lexus calls it.
Dealer wants $230 fob, $100 programming, $100 physical key, so $430. trying to get cheaper than that.
It looks like recommended is to buy cheap fob online, then use techstream software? Does this work even for 2021 model? locksmith for physical key?
Just wondering what the recommended approach is for newer vehicles.
I believe that your 2021 is the same as my 2018. Here is what I did to add a third FOB.
I purchased a used, working and reset FOB online ( EBay highly rated seller ). It came with a new battery and a replacement blank uncut metal key.
I used TechStream to program the FOB to the RX350. There is a transponder chip inside along with the proximity and RKE transmitter that all must be programmed to the RX. The most important part is getting a used FOB that has been properly reset back to factory virgin status. The last step is to find a locksmith that can cut your replacement key to work in the drivers door.
These used FOB's go for around $100. You will want to open your current FOB and check the circuit board for the part number and the body of the FOB for the part number to ensure you get the exact match. Mine was 231451-0010 'G' and HYQ14FBB.
I have no idea if this is useful for newer Lexus vehicles but I have a friend that got his smart key replaced from an ACE Hardware store cheaper than a dealership. Some of those stores apparently sell the keys and have the programing equipment.
can i just use whats printed on outside, or need to open?
Mine says FCC ID : HYQ14FLB
IC: 1551A-14FLB
is that enough info, or should open?
There are several listed on EBay with that FCC ID number. Prices are just over $100. I would open it up and check the number on the inner circuit board to be sure. Looks like the number is 231451-3950 G.
Programming the new one yourself with TechStream isn't too bad. The difficult part was finding a locksmith to cut the key. Some will say they don't want to use the blank because it might be "hard" and hurt their machine...
Be sure to test the cut in the door lock before leaving.
I lost one of my 2022 fobs a few months ago. Dealer told me that those $100 EBay fobs won’t work with my car because of feature changes so I ended up paying ~$500 for a new one which included reprogramming my wife’s fob (for security reasons). I’d be interested if you can get it to work.

$500 for a new FOB. Geez, what is their profit margin?!

Yeah, I felt gouged not only from the cost of the new FOB but also the $100 programming charge for my new and existing FOB. I learned my lesson though….be more careful with my keys.
not sure if I will take to dealer to program for $100 or research techstream stuff. time always limited so seems easier to let dealer do it
My local Lexus dealer at the time used a "traveling" locksmith as an outside vendor to do the FOB programming and key cutting work. They didn't do that work in house. He had everything needed on the van and had many local dealers on his route. The process to delete keys and add new ones on my LCert 2016 RX350 took over an hour so we chatted about the job. He would also do work for private individuals and auction sites but he wasn't much less than a dealer.
Bought one for $115 from keylessentryremotefob website for my year make and model. Part numbers match but dealer was unable to program it, so going to return it. Had to pay full price at dealer, $420
I had a FOB duplicate made last week for my 2017 Lexus RX350: $100 for a used (unlocked) OEM FOB including a third-party key blank from a reputable eBay source and $100 for programming and key cutting at our local (auto) locksmith. Total $200 + tax.
