Default '21 RX450 Front End Opening

Does anyone know the purpose of the opening on the very bottom below the place where a fog light would be? The opening on my car has a ribbed covering inside on the passenger side, however, the one on the driver's side (pictured) is simply an open hole. That seem strange.

You answered your own question!
That's where the fog-lights would go if you had bought them. One may be missing the cover placed there instead of the light.

No, the fog lights are in the smaller, horizontal opening above the one about which I am inquiring.

I've wondered at the functionality of the vertical openings as well. The only reasonable explanation I can come up with is they direct air to the brake rotors to cool them down.

Nimimi - Look into the opening with a flashlight. Does it look like an air inlet? There may be a trans oil cooler in there, but you'd have to remove a panel underneath, just forward of the wheel to be sure. I saw this question somewhere on this forum, but can't remember where. Good luck and congratulations on your new ride. Ray A.

This is 2016, but yours is probably the same. 2 is the air scoop, 1 is the trans oil cooler.

I have wondered as well. If it was for brake cooling, I would expect it to be the same on both the driver and passenger sides. I had just assumed it was for some sort of cooler such as raylor4 illustrated. Do all 2021 RXs have this or does this identify it as having the "Towing Prep Package?" That package I believe includes the transmission oil cooler identified in the illustration provided earlier. It may also be that for build standardization, that opening is open on all new RX vehicles?

Well, I looked in this opening with a flashlight and, at least for my 2020 RX350 without the trailer tow option, the opening goes nowhere. It's blocked off by a piece of black plastic. I just write it off as another RX350 mystery.

Yes, I have the tow package. When I shine a light in the opening, I can see the fins of some type of cooler about 8 inches in. It just appears strange that the driver's side has this big, open hole while the passenger side has a cover over it.

I agree. You would think for aesthetic reasons they would have made them the same on each side. Don't they understand, some of are just too OCD for this kind of variation ...
