Have you considered a cargo carrier? Wind noise is definitely less of a problem, and, depending on the garage, parking in a garage may not be a problem either.
BTW, I have one (not the same model). We haven't had the need to use if for travel, but for hauling things that we don't want to be inside the vehicle (e.g. steer manure).
Thanks for the suggestion. I was aware of this option but didn't like weight being handing off the back (may not be much weight in our case though), possible security issues, and not sure how it may interfere with the rear proximity/cross traffic/parking sensors. But something to consider if a roof top is out because of height restrictions.
One thing I forgot to ask... does your RX fit in a garage with your Thule cargo box installed? To me this is a deal breaker for any roof top cargo carrier - It would be a pain/inconvenient to have to load/unload and install/uninstall outside in bad weather. I've measured around 16"-17" from top of factory rails to lowest point of opened garage door. I don't know how high the cross-rails would be above the factory mounting rails - haven't bought anything yet.
It does not fit in the garage with the box installed. Its too high.
Has anyone used a roof bag for an RX 350 rather than a suspended roof box or roof basket? Thule has two that rest on the roof and attach to the cross bars with straps. The Interstate and Outbound. One main difference is the former has padding on the bottom to cushion against the roof. When I go to a Lexus dealer website to purchase cross bars, the page states that the bars “allow you to take advantage of your vehicle’s roof space”. But then there is this caution: “Accessory roof rack cross bars with side rails is not recommended for luggage. See Owner’s Manual for details.” I find no details in the manual. I do remember a footnote in the build your own Lexus printout that had a similar caution.
We used a roof bag on a Volvo XC70 without issue. Is Lexus saying that their roof is too flimsy to hold a couple of luggage bags in a roof bag? And the only carrier you can use are suspended boxes or baskets?
