Default Low towing capacity vs highlander

How does the Highlander end up with 5000lb rating and we're suck with only 3500lb?

Highlander is 1500 lbs. where did you get the 5000? My old GX470 was 6500 lbs. There is no way the Highlander is 5000. The RX has more torque and more pulling power.

I'm pretty sure the highlander's capacity was 5000 lbs to the Lexus 3500. That's why the after market hitch options have a range in capacity 3500 to 6000 lb (Curt, Cequent, vs Draw-tite). This was true for the previous gen HL anyway (in V6 4WD).

If the Lexus has the tow package I'm pretty sure they have the same brake rotors / callipers, engine, transmission and oil cooler. I was told the difference is the softer springs in the Lexus and heavier weight of the Lexus caused the lower towing capacity.

That said, these seem like "guidelines" and 5000 lbs is a lot in a highlander, and looks like 3500 lbs is low for the RX if well balanced.

From web site:
With a 3.5-liter V6 engine, the 2020 Toyota Highlander can move a lot of cargo. If you are traveling for a weekend getaway or a cross-country road trip, you can rely on the new Highlander to help you take what you need. This SUV can tow a total of 5,000 pounds for all your travel
needs. Jan 6, 2020

Hard to believe a front wheel drive would pull 5000 and live to talk about it. The AWD would have no more towing power; it engages the rear wheels when needed, not for more towing power.

I’ll take everything I said back. The Toyota specs say 5000lbs. Sorry for the misinformation. My bad!

5000lb capacity comes with the V6 highlander. I would bet a FWD V6 Highlander is hard to find.

They all are FWD. Basically same drivetrain configuration as the Lexus RX350.

Wish the RX had at least 4000lb rating, 20' boats are about 3000lb so 4000 with trailer.

Not everyone has the option to buy a dedicated tow beater.

I’m sure towing 1500lbs comes at a significant performance cost. I put about 8 bags of mulch in my rx, and the car struggled starting and going up hills.

Huh

I tow a 2700 lb boat right now with no issues. I'm looking at some 3000-3100 now but that would be close to 4k with trailer I'm sure with trailer brakes it would be fine it's just the liability thing if something happens.

Wow! I wonder if I was in the incorrect driving mode. Which mode do you use?

I'm not sure if you're screwing with me or if you're serious

Any mode.

The RX350 towing package includes engine oil and transmission oil coolers! Do not burn your tranny! It's very expensive to repair and replace and needless to say the same with your engine.
