Default Nav/Bluetooth Issues

My 2016 RX450h has intermittent but more consistent problems with Bluetooth and the Nav system. The dealer has no solution.

My wife’s iPhone 8 will connect to the system ok but first start in the morning the car goes right into “call in progress” mode, where it thinks she is talking to someone. It happens on and off after the first start of the day. The only way to get out of that mode is to hit the start call button on the phone then stop the call. I have hard reset the phone, deleted and re-pair it many times, and reinstalled her iOS. The dealer did a hard reset and then it became difficult to re-pair all our phones.

In my phone’s case while connected it randomly disconnects then reconnects within about 5-10 minutes. Strange!

With regard to the nav I think we all know that the Lexus system is one of the worst on the market. But when it gives me a message that it has found an alternative route due to traffic conditions and asks if I want to see the map with the reroute, if I click on it, the system freezes until the option is no longer available, and about half the time the whole system reboots.
plus, if I accept a reroute, it is ALWAYS worse than the original route.

Has anyone had similar issues, and if so have they been fixed? I can’t believe that there has never been a firmware update for this car and that the Nav for a 2019 is identical to this one....

i am am working with Lexus corporate on this and the dealer has been great but my wife is getting to the point where she wants a new car....

Ask your dealer's Tech Specialist to pair your phones to another 2016 RX, ought to be one in Pre-Owned inventory. Compare the
behavior with your RX's to narrow it down. Are you running any Apps such as Waze that "create" a phone call to report traffic?

Thanks for the suggestion.
Actually, my wife's phone did it with the 2019 loaner we had, but I was told that there is nothing updated between '16 and '19 which I find hard to believe.

While that issue may be related to the phone itself, mine still disconnects on its own and the nav system is horrible, and reboots on its own.

There is a firmware update available. You can even do it yourself. Go to lexusdrivers.com, under Resources go to Multimedia Systems Update. Then just put in your vehicle and follow the instructions.

The car has been to the dealer many times for this issue, if this is the case, why didn't they do it?

Also, my understanding of the OTA firmware updates is that all they do are add or remove apps from the APP menu.

I replaced my wife's phone today, it will be here tomorrow, we shall see what happens.

Thanks!

I don't know, you would have to ask them. OTA updates only update the app suite. This firmware update fixes bugs in the overall system.

Default RX and iPhone 8 Issue--Anyone Else?

I created another post about communication issues with my '16 RX-450h and my wife's iPhone 8. The issue is ongoing, so I thought I would describe it in further detail to see if anyone else is having the problem.
When my wife gets in the car, and her phone connects, it goes into conversation mode (thinks she's on the phone), and her own number and name comes up on the display. She can't make or receive calls at all until she goes into the phone itself, calls another number, then hangs up right away. That SOMETIMES clears the problem, but sometimes does not. Even if she clears the problem, she can't use Siri to make phone calls at all.

The dealer has been very patient and helpful, but we are now at the point where it may be necessary to get a different vehicle. The dealer has reset the radio, replaced the radio, and done everything to the car that they could. We have replaced the phone, reinstalled the software in the phone, and updated the operating system often.

It does NOT do it with any other phone other than my wife's and I have the same phone. It is a strange phenomenon and Lexus claims that they have never seen it, but they admit that their telematics interface is not up to the competition.

I will also add that her phone works perfectly in my BMW, and my spare car which has a third party bluetooth radio.

Has anyone else had this or a similar problem, and if so, how was it resolved (if at all). Other than this we love the car.

Thanks in advance.

I'm going to assume you guys have already done the standard troubleshooting, deleted the phone from the car, deleted the bluetooth profile (ie.. "forget this device") on your iPhone etc so I'll attempt to give you some additional steps.

1. Have you updated the iPhone to the LATEST version of IOS? (Currently, IOS is at version 12.3.1.)
2. Does she have an Apple watch paired to the device? If so, also ensure its updated to the latest version of WatchOS (currently, version 5.2.1)
3. Are you using the WAZE app on that phone? If so, try removing the app and check result. (Waze has a setting that allows it to talk when you're even on the radio, it spoofs an incoming call to do this which may make your display look like its getting a call from you).
4. Have you tried removing ALL paired devices in the vehicle (and "forgetting them" on the device itself) and then re-pairing them, starting with HERS first?)
5. Does she have the lexus ENFORM app suite on her phone? Is the app itself completely updated?
6. Finally, you can backup your phone completely in itunes, and then nagivate to settings - > general - > Reset - > Reset All Content and Settings (Make sure you have a backup!). Then restore your phone with the latest backup and try to repair again.

For the record, I have an iPhoneX, my wife has an iPhone8 plus and they work flawlessly both in my RX and my wifes GS.

That's because in the early days when iPhones wouldn't work with Toyota/Lexus hands free systems, BMW especially and many other companies (e.g. Parrot) bent over backwards to accommodate Apple's flaunting of the Bluetooth standards set by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) which was my corporate neighbor in Overland Park Kansas before the SIG relocated to Kirkland Washington.

Toyota may have loosened standards somewhat to make iPhones work a little better in their vehicles due to customer pressure but it was nothing like what some other companies did to essentially allow Apple to excrete whatever ***** they wanted.

If you can't tell, I'm not an Apple product / iPhone fan. Hell would have to freeze over before I would buy an Apple product. My wife has an iPhone but she's "low tech" person and it's perfect for her except it doesn't allow using all the vehicle features.

So ... if you are also wondering why you can't fully utilize all the email/texting features on your Toyota/Lexus systems when you are using a iPhone like you can when using an Android phone, it's because Apple didn't follow industry standards.

At this point I am going to try a new ES with the latest software to see if this does it, if it does not I will consider trading up when the ‘20 comes out but otherwise the car is going soon...even Lexus IS baffled..
