So if the windshields are double paned, you'll get double reflections. Just like you get with double paned windows in your house. To OP, did you treat your windshield with any chemicals? Rain-X, Anti Fog, etc. that may exaggerate the reflections?

Safety glass, which is what all car windshields are made of, consists of two pieces of tempered glass laminated together with a plastic film in the middle. All laminated together, that’s the key part, laminated under heat and pressure.

Double pane glass is completely different, it has a gap between them, often sealed and filled with an insulating gas to prevent condensation inside. Cars do not use double-pane glass. The side windows are tempered glass.

With windshield safety glass, a tiny bit of incident light scattering is inevitable from the boundaries between the layers. Normally though this would not be noticeable. I would suspect instead the inside of the windshield isn’t really clean, it is very difficult to really get it super clean since it’s awkward to reach.

I can't help but really need to find answers for my ghosting windshield. My windshield got hit with a rock and have my windshield replaced. After replacing it with aftermarket, I noticed that Im seeing lights ghosting. Went back to the shop and they noticed it too, so they replaced it again witha new windshield but still the same. So went back there again and this time they put Lexus brand windshield for additional payment but still seeing lights specifically leds ghosting. I cant find any answers yet on how to solve this issue. Does anyone have solve this issue?

Please find attached a page from TIS (Toyota Information System) that shows a characteristic that has not been discussed in this thread.
The difference between regular laminated glass and that used for cars with HUD is that the two sides are not parallel with each other.

No wonder why I see distortion on vehicles with HUD.

When light crosses any medium of different materials (air-to-glass, for example), the beam is bent. With transparent materials, a small part of the beam is reflected and most of the beam is transmitted. Depending on the angle of the incident beam, this can lead to double images. You can see the following simple system with just one pane of glass. Each interface between air and glass bends the beam and reflects a small portion. In this illustration, there are four bounces internally and leads to 2 double images that are much dimmer than the original image that made it through the glass.

The greater the angle of the windshield, the double image moves away from the original image. Coatings to help reflect the HUD adds another surface to cross.

HUD windshields tend to have a wedge to prevent ghosting on the HUD reflected image:

This can change the ghosting angles as the wedge is wider at the top of the windshield, in addition to internal bounces due to material change.
