Default How reliable is the Continously Variable Transmission(CVT)?

Looks like the RX comes with 8 speed CVT. Never owned a car with this kind of transmission so not sure about the pro and cons are. From reading, CVT use steel belt, rubber belt or even chain. Not sure which kind the 2016 and up RX350 uses. So what kind does it use? How long do the belt/chain last? Will they break at certain point? Does it need to be replaced at certain miles like timing belt? Does it need periodic inspection by dealer which may add to the service cost? Love to hear your knowledge/thoughts about this.

The 4RX350 does not use CVT. Instead, it uses 8 speed tranny. Big difference. Here's a preview of the 4RX (4th Generation RX350) detailing all the improvements/changes over the 3rd Gen. RX.

The rx450 has a cvt, extremely durable compared to a belt or band cvt. It uses planetary gears
the rx350 uses a 8 speed trans.

My understanding is that the 450h shares most of it's drivetrain with a 3rd generation Prius. So it's super duper reliable and on top of that it's way faster and has the reliability of a Lexus.

I have heard the Lexus CVT described as bullet proof. So far both of mine have worked with out flaw. I like them very much.

Sorry but can not agree. VERY few problems reported makes it bullet proof to me. You may call it what you want.

Its about as close to bulletproof as you can get for a transmission. I've only ever seen 1 be replaced, and that was due to fluid loss from an accident.

I bet that owner doesn't believe it's bullet proof. Having fun here of course.

I talked to one of the senior techs at my dealer and he said that he can not remember his shop ever taking one apart.

hahaha this is why I rarely speak in absolutes...

If I shot at you with a machine gun, and only "VERY few" bullets hit you, are you still bullet proof? I'd think not

I hope every RX transmission (CVT or not) lasts 1 million miles.
