The background noise level in the microphone makes using any voice control or phone conversation impossible. This is with all windows up and the radio off. Sitting still it all works great. Is there some setting I am mising?

I am not sure but I use the RX mic to make and receive calls all the time, even while driving.

 

Make sure your air isn't blowing too hard and also your vents aren't pointed up. The mic is with the sunroof controls. So air blowing across it can affect the car hearing you.
