Oil changes maintenance Schedule
I intend to follow the manufacturer's suggestion which is 12 months or 10,000 miles. Currently my '16 RX 350 has 4,000 miles in eight months will probably have about 8,000 miles in April after our trip to Fl.
Thanks for asking this question. I need some advice as well.
Spoke to a mechanic friend and he said he would never let his own personal vehicle go that long without an oil change. He would change it at 7,000 miles.
I'm at almost 9,000 miles and decided to take a look at the oil with the dip stick. The oil is BLACK with hints of orange/yellow. Doesn't this mean it is time to clean the oil? I know it's full synthetic but still is this safe for the engine?
My second service 10,000 mile service is free but after I'll prob not go with that 10,000 mile schedule anymore. Unless you guys think its ok?

I know what Lexus recommends as well but I will be changing my oil every 5000 miles. It absolutely does not hurt anything to change your oil early. Like I did with my German cars, I will change the oil every other 5000 miles while getting lexus to change it every other oil change. So I will be doing the 5k, 15k, 25k, 35k etc on my own with Full Synthetic and Toyota Filter. Then get Lexus to do it on the 10k, 20k, 30k, etc. It might be overkill but it gives me peace of mind knowing my oil is clean. I mean we are talking about an extra $40 a year (at least for me).
You need to do tire rotations at 5K mile intervals, but you can get that done at any tire shop (usually free of charge).
I change the oil once a year, My wife puts around 8k a year on the car. I sent the oil to Wix lab to test the oil to make sure this drain interval was OK. The test showed all was good and I could have gone another 4000 miles on the oil. I use full Syn. oil and the OEM filter.
0W20 oil is synthetic oil. That's the only oil for 4RX
So many factors to how often. Climate, stop and go driving, lots of short trips, dusty areas, etc. Have to do it as per Lexus or possible warranty problems. However, after a winter of -40 to +10 I will always change it in the spring. After that around 6-7K miles.
I change the oil on all of my vehicles between 5000 and 6000 miles running Mobil 1 full synthetic with a Fram filter. After switching to full synthetic oil over 10 years ago I basically doubled the oil change interval of 2500 to 3000 miles of a conventional oil. I know you can get more mileage out of synthetic oil but I am a firm believer in fluids being the lifeblood of your car. On my automatic transmission equipped vehicles I will drain the transmission fluid from the drain plug in the pan every oil change and every fourth time or 20,000 to 24,000 miles, I will drop the pan and change the transmission filter. I had 04 RX 330 with 185,000 miles and not one mechanical failure! I have had American vehicles that I have gotten the same results out of. When I have had a mechanical failure and had to tear an engine down it was clean as a whistle inside, no more than a film that could be wiped clean with a shop red rag. I might be a little fanatical but it has proven itself and I don't baby my vehicles either, I believe in driving em like you stole em!
If there is synthetic oil in the motor it should go to 10k. You can change it before if it makes you feel better but Lexus will charge you. Today's motors do not have the metal shavings and other crud from breaking in your engine. Be warned, as when to change your oil can border on a religious thing for some. You do what you want.
You would then the get your free oil change at the 10k service. The 5k is more about checking fluid levels and looking for leaks. Tire get rotated.

I did my first at 5K cause I'm old school and it makes me feel better. Then after that I do it before 10K but I take into consideration the conditions I have been driving in. After the long cold winter and lots of hot and very cold cycles I change the oil. If I have only gone 5K in that time...I change it.
Like Greg says, it's more of a religious thing than common sense...at least for me.
If you stick with at least the recommended oil changes as per Lexus, I doubt you will ever have problems or warranty issues due to the oil change routine.
