No. PCS is on, unless you go to settings and turn it off; it doesn't require cruise control to be on.
I saw it come on once when I came too close to another car (I guess) -- it said in big letters, "BREAK!" in the HUD I was not close enough for it to break for me.
I have had this happen twice. Shows red in HUD and screen between tach and speedo.
Like you I have no had the braking kick in but from what I understand it is MAX braking when it occurs. That will be an eye opener for sure!
I care nothing about hands off driving. Be careful what you wish for as one day you will no longer be able to "drive" and you will just sit there dreaming about it. I love to drive and do not look forward to the day where we can not.
the lane keep assistance or centering function does not work very well on mine. When turned on LKA with dynamic cruise control, I feel the steering wheel always wants to drift the car to one side even on a pretty straight road and the car is bounced around or give me the lane departure warning signal. Most of the time it tries to drift to the right, not sure if this is normal but I choose to turn it off after using it a couple of times. Hopefully Lexus will have some software update on this otherwise it's useless to me.
The car won't steer itself or keep itself in the lane if that's what you're asking.
Even with Lane Keep Assist on, your hands has to be on the steering wheel, otherwise the system will disengage. Pretty useless if you ask me.
Kind of.. The Volvo pilot assist basically tracks the cars around and below 31 mph does everything for you albeit requiring hands on the wheel. Pilot Assist 2 is suppose to increase the speed limiit to 70 or so.

little dystopian lol. Plus true autonomous tech is far far off. I`m more concerned with here and now I guess.

So its a bouncer ARGHHH. The dealerships around me have a set drive path which doesnt include highway time, so i couldnt test out the LKA and DCC. All i could test was the blind spot detection and lane dep alert
Avoiding the accident is always optimal. "Full force braking" sounds acceptable compared to rear ending the vehicle in front of me. If it works one time it paid for itself and more. No accidents or even a ticket in 30+ years but you never know. I can see myself looking in the rear view mirror if this ever happens.
Thanks.
When using cruise control and radar, the braking is not as abrupt and will stop you more gradually. I use it all the time in traffic. Was a little uneasy at first letting it stop on it's own, but it works great.

I have experienced this, too. My comments were mainly directed towards the crash avoidance aspects. The cruise control braking works quite well.
For those of you who want to know if PCS works and how it works here is a glimse of it in action via third person view. Fast forward video to the 3:29 mark and you will see it in action.

I have taken two extended test rides in RX and tested LCA which is only on when ACC on on. It does keep you on the center of the lane from speeds 100 down to 0. At speeds less than 25 a cars needs to be seen by the radar in front of you -such as stop and go traffic. You can remove your hands for about 15 sec before it warns you. This is just as good a what Volve claims as traffic assit or something like that. You need your hands on the wheel with them also.
Maybe Volvo can take a sharper turn than the RX but on an interstate highway but I was still inpressed by the LCA. Now if the ACC is off then the LKA does ping pong because it gets to the line and maybe over it before it gives some steering assist. So there are two things LKA and LCA which are different.

A couple posts indicated lane drifitng, and bends threw off the system on the RX.
The Volvo is also going tesla like with full speed range control on their pilot assist and no longer requiring a vehicle via MY17 which maybe a SW Update on MY16s.
Again as much as I love Lexus, they are stubborn on the whole modular bit in every design. No updates just new vehicle is the only way to get a new feature
