Hi - i took my 2017 Rx 350 w/45k miles into the dealer for service. They’re saying the engine has carbon deposits and want $300 to clean the system. I’ve always used premium fuel.
Any idea on whether this is legit or not? Is it safe to take it elsewhere for less?

I'd pour in a bottle of Techron into a full tank of gas. I use it every 5,000 miles or so. And if you haven't been using a Top Tier gas brand, I would switch to it immediately.

I don't believe premium or regular fuel will make a difference. It's the type of additives that help keep the engine clean. This dealer is looking to make some easy money. How is he going to clean off the top of the pistons without tearing the engine apart? Get a second opinion or better yet just forget it.
Cleaning for valve deposits is necessary on some engines; it should not be on yours.
Your engine has dual port and direct injection; this should not be necessary like on direct-injection only engines. A bottle of Gumout Regane HM or Techron every 3 to 4k miles should be all you really ever need. Premium vs. regular does not matter on this issue. PEA as an additive is highly effective (Gumout Regane, Techron, Redline FI), most additive detergents are not very effective.
That is a $300 scam. That would be the last time I would go to that dealership. I would go to the nearest Toyota dealer from now on which is what I do anyway.
Have you noticed a significant drop in MPG's or rough idle/running, etc?? It's probably just the dealer trying to get easy $$ by pouring the same stuff you can into the gas tank. I would get some of the recommended gas treatments, and pour the whole bottle into a half tank of gas, for a more concentrated dose, and go from there.

If I were you, I would ask to show me the carbon buildup and where.
I would ask how they know my car with 45K miles has carbon deposits?
Agree wholeheartedly, what is the proof ? Do they have a boroscope picture of the inside of the combustion chamber? If so, ask to see it and compare it to a similar mlileage model without deposits....
