Default Data Communication Module has corrosion??

My daughter-in-law is the original owner of a 2015 RX350. The check engine light was turning on intermittently. After quite a bit of time, the dealership finally said that the DCM (86741-0E030 TRANSCEIVER, Telephone) had corrosion on the connector (see image) which was causing a P0500 error. The invoice states: "found liquid in Data Communication Module and connector (no warranty coverage for this) replaced DCM and cleaned connector, cleared codes, verified fix." They charged her $1600 for this. She paid for the service and later that week, showed me the invoice. I have been looking at the RX350 images on the web, and the DCM appears to be in the center column near the shifter. From what I can see, the center column area is curved upwards, so I'm trying to figure out how a liquid could have made it under the area above the DCM and could have fallen on the DCM and then worked its way into the connector to cause corrosion. When I look up the P0500 code, it doesn't say anything about the DCM being involved or related to that circuitry. I really feel like they took advantage of her being a woman, she doesnt even eat or drink in the car, she is a very clean person, no kids either.

If you think the diagnosis was wrong or charges for parts and labor were not right, then talk to the service manager.

If the attached picture is from your daughter-in-la's vehicle, we see evidence of moisture in the connector. I cant comment on the module ... if it was soaked and needed replacement?

What caused it to happen is another mystery, but it has nothing to do with "taking advantage of". If you think the spillage was done intentionally by the shop to generate money, you can make the accusation but proving it might be hard as a problem existed before the repair was done. imho being a woman or not is not the issue as the situation has nothing to do with the gender of the customer. If you have any evidence of your claim talk to the general manager or Lexus corp [USA]. Most likely Lexus corp will direct you to the General manager of the dealership.

PS: I assume Lexus dealership is the repair facility.

Could easily get liquid into the connector, spill a drink it finds its way into the module. Usually the connectors can be cleaned replacing the module (if they actually did) seems extreme.

Always ask for old parts back, they belong to you. Yes sabotage is possible people would be shocked how often repair shops commit fraud.

Corrosion like that does not appear overnight. Some prior owner or occupant spilled a drink that went down that area a long time ago and it took this long to corrode the connections.
