What year and model is your vehicle? I doubt if your fuel gauge is isolated to its own fuse. The entire instrument cluster is probably fused together as a single unit.

Default Fuel gage fuse

Is 2010 RX450H
That is probably why can't find a fuse for it. Have tried a wooden spoon but don't think goes in far enough to see if full.
What i don't understand is the dashboard info keeps saying 400 miles available??

Most fuel gauges operate using a float in the tank. Your float may be stuck or compromised.

If you cannot DIY, you will probably save significant money if you take it to an independent shop that knows Toyotas well.

Default one step at a time

First check if the fuel gauge is working. Do you see F(ull) on the gauge when you fill the tank and does it progressively move to E(empty) with warning light/message Low Fuel as you consume the gas.

If that is working as expected them there is no issue with the fuel gauge [including the sending unit].

Miles to empty is a calculation based on amount of fuel and previous/expected mpg info.

Once you pass the fuel sending unit test above, then you need to check the other display like average mpg, mpg since last fill etc. You can reset these values or throw the hammer by disconnecting the battery. Sometimes gremlins get in the software and a power reset is the only solution. Keep in mind you may loose some other stored information too. At least one member had issues afterwords, but I personally have had no issues even after replacing a dying 12v battery. Make sure the terminals are not reversed as that WILL cause disaster.

OK that's a couple of good ideas. Have just installed a new battery so wonder if that's what it is
Can you advise how to do a "reset" Ta

I would need to re-read the user manual but a disconnect of battery for about 1/2 hr should do the power-reset. [from guess work, holding the display button [holding vs cycling to the next ] typically resets the value].

If you have not gone through at least one cycle of fuel refill [sizeable quantity of fuel], you may be in the re-learn mode. A power-reset would only bring about the same situation.

Many thanks Salim
Will try those
Only worry is can't get petrol in to tank
Seems to be blocked
wondered if some sort of "crash protection " shuts petrol tank off in case of crash and the year not used and then new battery has made it think that it was in a crash
Googling but no results so far

Please state the problems and what was the onset of the problems. Nothing wrong in trying to diagnose, but if you prejudice us and give a narrow description [leading] then it is hard to help you.

Crash protection has nothing to do with opening up the gas tank. Some fuel inlets have a flapper and that can be gummed up. There can be other issues like you can not pump down gas as the air inside the tank can not escape [like unable to swallow with the nose closed]. So describe the issue and let us try to help you.

In case you did not have 12v for a while, the vehicle may have tried to upload the latest firmware and for that you have to follow the instructions on the screen. There can be further issues if the traction battery has been depleted below a certain voltage [this can be remedied by the dealership].

Salim

ps: Gas for us and Petrol for you.
RX has evolved over time and there is nothing magical or profound about it. It has the age old fuel gauge but the newness is in the electronics to interpret and display information. The safety feature is cut the fuel delivery pump off in case the engine is not running. No change to age old fuel inlet.
