Default Use safety connect power for dashcam?

I don't have safety connect subscription so the safety connect button near the map light is kind of useless. I wonder if I can remove the button and use its power source for the dashcam, i.e. avoiding running the long power cable to the cigarette lighter. I understand I might need to use some voltage converter, and make sure the wire can handle the amp but that's probably it? Has anyone done that before?

There's an old thread with pictures showing someone doing just what you're proposing.

I believe he gutted a cigarette lighter to USB adapter to get the 5v for the camera from the 12v power in the overhead console.
