When does the timing chain have to be replaced
Hi guys
I got a 3rd gen 2009 Lexus rx450h
it's got 160000kms
on cold starts it vibrated and a rattling noise can be heard once warmed up it's fine
The engine light did come on when plugged it said cylinder 6 misfire they swapped injectors coils etc. But it still said misfire cylinder 6
but after diagnosing a bit they saying it's the timing chain, since oil pressure is low on cold start the chain is loose and doesn't tension up once warmed it's tight so it's fine
is it normal for timing chain go go out at this milage
they also say we have to do the whole kit one time chain, gears etc.
thanks

I think that is a first on this forum. The cold start rattling is not the timing chain on the third generation. Who did this diagnosis?
See this thread. https://www.clublexus.com/forums/hyb...cold-soak.html
I think you need to get a second opinion from a Toyota specialist.
Try changing your oil and using 4.5 quarts 0w20 and 2 quarts 0w40. I found the slightly thicker mixture reduces the cold start rattle. Also replace your oil filter base as they can get clogged reducing oil flow which leads to the noise being louder as it takes oil longer to move around.

Timing Chain or Timing Chain Guide
I own a 2013 RX350 with 80K miles on it. Recently, I have been hearing a noise (like a ticking sound that is loud enough) coming from the front of the engine. I disconnected the serpentine belt and let the car idle to eliminate Tensioner or Idler Pulley or the Water Pump and AC Compresor or Alternator, but the noise is still there. Anyone had a problem like mine? was it the timing chain guide?

Or just the fuel injectors ticking due to deposits build up as the miles add up. Try a 20 oz. bottle of Techron fuel system cleaner in your gas tank. Then change your oil & filter after you have used up that gas and filled it up again.
