Although our second Lexus but first service visit to the Lexus dealer with our 2010 RX450H with 80k miles.
450 dollars for the 80k mile TRANSMISSION SERVICE .. when questioned that an actual used transmission costs that much, I was told that new tranny for this type of car would be $5000.00. I guess I was used to my 1998 Toyota RAV4... LMAO !!!!!!!
330 dollars for the GPS update !! .......... cuz that is how much it costs.
so spending 780 dollars............. so excited !!!!!!
$450 sounds quite a lot for, on the "h", is essentially just an oil change. An hour of labor and the fluid, what else could they have done to justify the cost?
I wouldn't have paid for GPS update. Not at that price, no way.
The dealership experience does cost.
My wife travels a lot and GPS had to be updated. I would not let her put her Garmin from her old car in front of the OEM GPS which is what she was wanting. I am all OEM guy.
I paid extra for this car to have all these bells and whistles. Now they must be used at all cost. LOL.
I've had my RXh for 28 months and 48.6K miles; and I've had the navigation updated twice, and the front and rear gearbox oils changed once.
Not keeping the car updated is like buying a Montblanc fountain pen and then whining about the cost of ink.
We travel with the factory navigation, the Garmin, AND Waze running (don't forget the Valentine 1) - and yes, still buying the full compliment of satellite subscriptions.
The car is great. It is not cheap.
My Lexus dealer nearly ridiculed me about wanting to change the "lifetime fluid" in the gearboxes. His price estimate was ridiculous. I cut a couple hundred dollars off it at the Toyota dealer - and they were happy to do it - and bragged that they had a Lexus mechanic - whatever that means - that would work on my car.
I'll do another fluid change at 60K miles.
Mechanically yes, but the maps can usually wait, especially at the going rate (unless they have a special going on.)
My car was nearly one year old before I took delivery of it; and the navigation was 17 months old at that time. I update it three or four months after I bought it (I didn't realize that Lexus wouldn't have had it up to date when I bought it); and I just updated it in January (that's about a year or less later) because the community I was staying in (The Villages, FL) had changed so much over the past year (we were in a new neighborhood/village) that the navigation lapses were driving me nuts.
I haven't found that anyone offers 'specials' on navigation - both of them cost me about $300 each (half of that labor) - which is really out of line - but I understand the concept of supply and demand (more appropriately, monopoly) - so I was stuck.
My Garmin updates 4 times a year, I think; and the navigation on a phone is about as updated as it gets (I don't use the phone because it eats too much of my data plan). We use the Garmin because it stores a zillion of our "favorite places" - and we use it largely as a travel log (I download the tracks to my PC - when I remember to do so) that we use to "find" places that we've liked/been.
Isn't this the same GPS replacement disc they sell online...the 2013 Lexus edition...delivered for $179.00.
Just remove old and replace with new.

The $179 gets you the update and activation code, but it is not user installable. The vehicle must be connected to a system at the Lexus dealer to "call home" and activate the update. It is a form of copy protection similar to the activation codes used for PC computer software.
Do not feel too bad since many of those BMW drivers will pay more on some other repair/service that you most likely ever will on your RX.
So let them have their cheaper map updates.
I am one of those BMW owners also! My M3 takes 9 litres of 10W60 (not easy to find) and a filter that is only used on my V8 and the V10 M5. Needless to say it's a $25 filter.
Oil changes were around $125 in parts alone if I do it myself, you don't want to know what the dealer charges. (Good thing is BMW includes free maintenance for 4 years), so only had to do this after the 4 years was up.
I am happy to have the RX as a daily and be able to do <$50 in parts DIY oil changes, but still love my M3!
