Back in 2008 I was looking for a crossover to replace my car. I pretty much decided on a Murano when my neighbor bought an RX. She insisted I drive it before I made a decision and Wow, I was impressed.
The price difference wasn't that great when you added to the Murano what was standard on the RX.
So I bought my first Lexus.
I traded it in in 12 because the iPod hookup was in the glove box and awkward to use and I wanted a backup camera.
We looked at lots of SUVs SRX, MDX, and many others but in my opinion none compared to Lexus.

I was this < > close to buying a Range Rover Vogue SE. Facelift model (not the very latest one - the post 2011). Loved the vehicle, but the running costs and known issues put me off after getting involved in a busy UK RR forum for a few months. I found a good RR I wanted to test drive but because of my niggles about costs/reliability I had one last look around at viable alternatives before committing to a RR. A day visiting dealerships saw a trip to my local Lexus dealer to try an RX450h on the recommendation of a friend that supplies tools to the dealership. He said the mechanics there had the easiest jobs in all the garages he supplied as the Lexus were so reliable compared specifically with RR, Audi, Merc and BMW. He said it was frightening in RR and Audi garages as the jobs they were doing were always major.

After months of looking at RR's it took one weekend to end up buying an RX!

I bought mine because I needed something that sits higher than a car and of all the CUVs I checked out, I liked this one the best.

 

We got ours because my wife and I wanted to have matching cars well kinda I have a white 2014 IS 350 Fsport with black interior. Her car is 2015 RX 350 F sport in white with black interior. The wife just wanted something a little bigger.

 

On our third, first time with a hybrid though. First, 2004 model bought end of 2003, was because I needed AWD for snow country and the RX was the most comfortable and nice driving available at the time. SUV is handy because of dogs. Second, 2008 model bought at the end of 2007, we bought because we had such a good experience with the first. More horsepower was a definite plus and we upped to the nav package as well. The '08 got killed by an Audi TT speeding up the shoulder so when we started looking again, we looked at other options, but the RX still won for us. We went with a used this time, FWD since we don't need AWD the same here in Texas as we did in the Sierras and the hybrid since hubby is SO good at negotiating.

I am a fan of Toyota hybrid technology: its apparent simplicity combined with the incredible sophistication of the HSD concept "software wise" deeply fascinates me. Having said that, I see the RX 450 that I bought preowned as a "fun" Prius - a car which actually I know well, having bought one brand new in late 2009; incidentally, at the time I paid the brand new Prius a third more than I've paid the used RX... However these two cars (Toyota Prius MY 2010 and Lexus RX450h, MY 2010 as well) have more in common that one might think - for instance, the HDD navigation system is almost dentical, as well as the traction battery (same size) and most of the system logics; in fact, I move indifferently my Scangauge from a car to the other without need of reprogramming any of the Xgauges. Actually there is some feature of the Prius that I would love to have in the RX too, like the Joystick which is a lot faster that RX the traditional gear shift lever.
Anyway, at the end these two cars complement each other, and I enjoy driving both: the Prius has tremendous efficiency and a smart size, it is a winner in the city; while the RX has all the power, the comfort and safety that me and my family need when we travel long distance.

Reliability? ... well the RX is far to be a simple car, it contains a lot of servomechanisms; and complication rarely rimes with reliability... time will tell.

 

My wife told me to buy the RX 350. (It has been her dream car).

 

1) Lexus reputation for well-developed technology
2) It was designed and built in Japan with Japanese pride
3) Lexus experience and leadership in Hybrid vehicles (mine's the '13 AWD Hybrid)
4) Subtle (not flashy) luxury that blends in with other traffic (doesn't yell $$, or "I'm Special", or "ticket me!")
5) I watched the Front, Offset, and Side Impact Crash Tests on YouTube.

 

EXCELLENT!

 

The main reason we bought ours was based on Lexus reliability... After our last two SUV's I wanted to try and avoid as many unscheduled service visits as possible..

I also like how refined the RX is.. And my wife loved the look of the F-Sport.

 

After dealing with a very unreliable Volvo XC70, reliability was our biggest issue.

We looked at the Toyota Venza and Highlander (assumed to have great reliability, too) but
the ride quality and interior amenities were nowhere near as good as the RX350. The premium we had to pay for the Lexus was worth every penny, and then some.

Two years into the experiment, we're thrilled with our choice.
