Default 2015 RX350 Shift Gear Questions

First time Lexus and RX350 owner. Not familiar with the new type of shift gear. When I shifted the gear from Park to Reverse straight down instead of moving to the right first, the vehicle would jerk and make a thud sound. Not sure if this would have damaged anything. After I have get used to moving the gear to the right first before shifting down, I would still sometimes have this jerk/thud. But if I do the whole shift movement (shift the right first) real quick then the chance of getting the jerk/thud is much less.

Any one has the same experience? Is it a manufacture defect or just I am not doing it properly?

Please help.

Is this during high idle speed, like on start during cold weather? Any car will shift with a thud if the idle is high. If this is the case, can you give your new car 30 seconds or so to warm up a little before shifting?

Thanks for replying. I did not pay attention to the idle speed, will do that next time. The temperature was around 40 F, not sure it qualified as Cold weather. Sometimes the thud happened even when the engine was warm.

unless you have a RX350 that's different from everyone else out there, it is almost impossible for you to shift from P to R without pulling the lever right then down, except maybe if you have a broken shift gate panel.

I checked the idle speed after starting the engine, it went from ~1400 rpm to ~1000 rpm after ~30 seconds.

I guess I did shift a bit but not all the way. I tended to pause for maybe a second before moving down, not sure that could contribute anything.

Hi Dajushi,

My Nx facing the same problem as you. It all start from you shifting from R to P, you need to do it right at this step and shifting out from P to R in later will be smooth.

I manage to overcome this by shifting from R to P properly. Please find my details post on NX forum today.

Hope you get rid of this problem soon.
