Passenger window broke today for no visible reason
I parked my RX350 2011 this afternoon at the office after lunch. An hour later I went out to leave and noticed the passenger window had a crack running about halfway across the window. It started from down in the door just even with the door lock. I got out and examined it and there is no obvious sign of anything hitting the window. No chip or impact sign.
I drove about 5 miles to pick my daughter up and called Lexus while I was parked waiting to pick her up. As I was tallking to the service rep to make an appointment to get in tomorrow I watched the crack slowly grow until it was all the way horiztonatl across the window. Pretty weird since I wasn't moving at all.
It cannot be felt by touching either side of the window and is completely within the laminated glass.
Has anyone had any problems with the windows like this? I'm thinking the window was under some kind of stress within the door and finally gave way. Seems like a problem when it was put together. I just turned 20,000 miles and bought the vehicle last July.
I'm not looking forward to paying to replace it but I'm guessing Lexus is not going to own up to any kind of problem.
Glass shouldn't just break. I've been driving for over 40 years and have never had anything like this occur.

go in with a good attitude and ask them politely what can be done. Tell them there is not damage to the window that could have caused it. CRUITER on here had something similar happen to his windshield when he was washing his car and they replaced it free to him.
also, cracks grow not only from movement but also from temperature changes so its a good idea to fill in chips as soon as possible.

Depending on how it's written up, it just might be. During my 1st year my windshield developed a vertical crack from the bottom toward the mirror while I was washing it in my driveway. The rep and service manager after a good look for evidence of a chip (couldn't find one) replaced it with OEM glass. They said it was very rare but just one of those things. They did an excellent job and has not been a problem since then. The high beam sensor and auto wiper sensor and rearview mirror were transferred to the new w/s without problems as well.

I should pick it up today. New window with tint $877.00. Ouch. They don't work with my State Farm repair shops either. MY agent called and they quickly told her they did not work with insurance.
When the car sat overnight an offshoot crack developed off the original crack towards the bottom of the door. When that happened a very small piece of glass, pinhead size, popped out at the junction of the two cracks. Barely noticeable when running a finger over it.
They looked at that and determined it was something hit the window.
I should have driven straight over there the day before when the crack had no visible defects at all, just the crack. Unfortunately I had a kid to take home and did not think it would get worse sitting overnight.
One of those things. I've got a $500 deductible and my agent told me that for what they would reimburse out of the $377 over it wouldn't be worth filing a claim.

A rock hitting a side window would be a pretty uncommon occurrence. Based on what you said about barely noticeable at the offshoot, I'd go back to the dealer and ask for a factory rep to get involved. I think that you might be able to get Lexus to stand behind you. Tell them to not destroy the original window.

You're the 4th person I know this has happened to. No signs of anything while the window just breaks/cracks. Its a freak occurance, but my suspicions are from the TX heat or due to uneven pressure from the cabin. I always crack one window slightly when parked during the day.
