Default 3M on headlights and foglights?

We're putting 3M on our 3G RX350 this Friday. I've spoken to several installers and a couple have recommended AGAINST putting 3M on the headlights and foglights due to heat build up. Does anyone have actual experience one way or the other? Apprecaite the input.

Your headlights are in a plastic cell and it's not recommended putting anything over that. The fogs however are lower to the ground with a glass lens. I don't remember the name of the product, you can probably find my previous post from a couple of years ago with a search but installed tinted covers (mine is light blue) over the lens to protect them and make the color output more natural. They are thick to protect the lens from debris and matched for the type car. There has not been any problems whatsoever.

This is interesting.

I've seen and heard of many detailing shops use a 3M film specifically on PLASTIC headlights to protect the original UV coating on the lights and prevent the lenses from yellowing over time.

Somethign as thin as the 3M film should not have any adverse effect on your hedlight heat dissipation. Kits are made specifically for them to protect from debris and the oxidation so many plastic lenses face over time.

Definitely put the plastic shield over the glass fog lens ...... I had one break in the first month......$331 total to replace it as the lens is part of the whole light assembly, if the lens breaks you have to replace the whole fog light unit.. I put the light blue one one.....no problems whatsoever. Different brands available, I used Lamin-X:

Frank, thanks for finding that link. Same one I used a couple of years ago and I forgot who it was.

RE: putting it on the headlights. I saw two different cars that had it installed. One was a Lexus RX and the other a Volvo. On both the surface area was so large with lots of angles and curves and the film so thick the installers were not able to get a clean install w/o wrinkles (minor but there) and bubbles. The Volvo driver said her husband was furious and would probably have it removed.

With proper washing and care I don't see a problem leaving the headlights alone. The acrylics are a lot better than 15 years ago and more when a lot of them did oxidize and fog.

I just found the link to original posting when I did the fogs. https://www.clublexus.com/forums/5648583-post16.html

The fog covers work perfect.

Exactly, turn all your lights on, it does not get that hot. The Sun can get it hotter.
