Default Flat Tire

OK, A first for me, going down the freeway 65ish mph and bam, road debris. No way to avoid it so I took the hit. Made a lot of noise and I thought I survived it for about 5 seconds. Then the dreadful noise that a flat tire makes. The car handled with ease and I made it to the side of the road. I hit the magic button and Lexus responded quickly and asked if anyone one was injured. They hooked me up with a repair service but, I chose to do it myself once they told me they would just come out and put the spare on for me. I was quite capable and heaven forbid they get my car dirty.

Risking life and limb, along the freeway, I changed the tire in no time, it was actually quite easy. Loaded up the carcass, make sure you carry something to lay the carcass on, I always do, and headed to the dealership. No damage to the Chrome rim but, a large puncture in the sidewall. Within an hour they had me on my way with a new tire. I had purchased tire and rim insurance when I bought the RX, they were going to file the paper work with the insurance and let me know if there would be a charge, no money up front at all.

I have to say for a bad situation the outcome was great, I credit Lexus and my Dealership for that. A huge benefit for paying the extra $. No regrets.

Very, very bad decision. Is your life worth a ruined rim?

Nope, I would not change a flat on today's freeways unless I absolutely had no choice, there are just too many morons out there who will drive right into your vehicle, it happens all the time. I'd either get it off an exit ramp or wait for Lexus service to come do it if that wasn't possible.

Its always a good idea to have a emergency vehicle park behind you with flashing lights when changing a flat on the highway. Where I live, accidents where cars get hit on the break down lane are on the news at least once a months. I always carry a emergency hazzard triangle in my trunk.
I carry flares I've had for years.
I hope they work.

AAA, Lexus roadside assistance and coverage through my insurance company. Don't think I'll be changing my tire It happened once on my 330 near the intersection of two busy highways on the way to the dealer. The tow truck driver had me sit in his cab while he changed it. Fortunately it was a tire facing the shoulder. Still, I was nervous for him.

MEP, I'm glad it worked out for you. Hope there aren't any residual effects from hitting the debris in the road.

Fortunately where I had to pull off the road was quite wide. That is the one good thing about the freeways here in AZ. It was 2 cars wide where I was but, I was still in fear and kept looking up.

Just went and looked under the car, wish I hadn't. A huge gouge 2 feet long in the plastic pan under the drivers seat. I will be removing it today and take pictures. It looks like at one point it hit a part of the body and made a large hole, maybe bent some metal, OUCH!!!!

Keep you posted.

Well here are the pictures. That black metal piece is supposed to be level and the white plastic clips hold the large plastic piece on, the white clips actually pulled thru the plastic cover. You can see the scratches on the black metal bar where the object hit. In the last picture to the left where you see the second tear, is where the gas tank sits. It did leave a nick in it, way too close for me.

Went to the dealer today to order all the pieces and it is around $300. At least I am alive, uninjured and no body damage to the RX.
