Default Oil Change

If I do oil change myself, will the engine warranty be void?

My opinion is no you will not void your warranty. If you do the work right and there is no obvious error. For example if you forgot to put oil, then of course our warranty is voided. Or if the oil drain plug leaks and the engine seize, then its your fault and warranty is voided.

It can't void your warranty as long as you use approved oil and filter. But the dealer may request for receipts for the oil and filter as proof of you doing the oil changes at a regular interval.

if, i mean a big if something would ever happen...the oil or remainder of the oil could be tested...very cheaply i might add....and a approximation could be obtained.....it will not void your warranty...including any accessory that you put on your car will not void the warranty.....the only thing they can void...is the part that it replaced....or they have to prove that what you added caused the failure.....you can thank sema for this...

if the lexus does not come with synthetic from new....i would wait untill it was broken in first....maybe 10k miles, so the rings would seat in.....i have read that synthetic oil is so slippery it takes longer for rings to seat....just my .02.....

Mobil makes good engine oil although price higher than others.

I agree with this. Use dino oil for a while and then switch to synthetic if you like synthetic.

0W20 is only available as a synthetic from what I've seen.

Being the owners manual calls for 0w-20 I'd say any brand would do. Just look it up in your Owners Manual to double check. As far as changing the oil yourself etc., that is covered in your owners Warranty Guide. I'd say just save your recepts from the oil purchase.

I did a cursory google and you are right that 0w20 engine oil is synthetic. Not only that but its not easy to find. Mobil and Amsoil both make that oil.

However I also read that you dont have to use 0w20 oil. The link
http://www.smartsynthetics.com/articles/5w20oil.htm
says that you dont have to. "The main reason 5W-20 or 0W-20 oil was specified for your engine is to increase the CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) reported to the Federal Government".

So if synthetic is not good for the first thousand of miles what do you use? I like to use dino oil but I may not have any choice since the first 25,000 miles of oil change is done by the dealer.

Nippon Oil also makes an Eneos 0w-20, and I think that's the oil they use at most dealerships.

I would say all new 2010 RX vehicles come with the 0W-20 oil. The oil is not required to be changed until 5000 miles or 6 months. This is a FREE oil change! Why would you want to put in any other weight oil ? On page 587 of the owners manual it says the recommended oil viscosity is 0W-20, and that it provides optimal levels of fuel efficiency. It further states "an oil with a higher viscosity may be better suited if the vehicle is operated at high speeds, or under extreme load conditions".

I for one will follow the manuals recommendation.

For the reason that has been mentioned above. Breaking in the engine for the first thousand mile is better with dino oil than synthetic because synthetic is too slippery.

If you want to follow the dealer's recommendation thats fine. Probably have no choice because the first 25k is done free at the dealership.

First 25k oil change is done free at the dealership? Is this true for every lexus dealership?
