Default 2010 RX350 vs. 2009 BMW X6

My girl is debating on getting the new RX or the X6. She likes the beamer more but my loyalty for Lexus is blood thick. Does anyone have any advice on either? Also does anyone know when the new RX will be sold in Canada?
Any advice is welcome.

Default Two aspects to the issue

This decision includes the technical part, i.e. the pros and cons of each vehicle, and the relationship part. I don't know what type of relationship you have, but it seems to me there is a risk if you push her away from her favorite. Suppose you convince her of the advantages of the Lexus and then after purchase she's not fully happy. You may have to take the blame for that. Any disappointment could result in negative feelings toward you. On the technical side I think they are both great vehicles. The Lexus definitely has an edge on the reliability side. Unless reliability is a big issue for her, I suggest she choose based upon test drive comparisons. If she thinks one choice is clearly superior, she should go with those feelings.

RX will pop into dealerships in Feb, in the US at least. but seeing as how they are produced in Canada, i think it will be around the same time.

as for the X6, kudos to your wife who can get over those horid looks. Seeing as how you have an RX already, im guessing you guys may want to try something new. though i personally have had both RX gens and am still looking at the new one.

the RX just does everything brilliantly, from utility to asthetics. the beamer will tend to your performance oriented self, but to me, all bmws have a stark and ugly interior, which is the place you will be spending most of your time.

people will also be telling you to only get the beamer is you want to corner hard etc. which is true, but for a family vehicle the RX serves as the best choice.

as for features, both are almost equal in terms of technology, as the RX now gets a similar heads up display. the RX will also probably be less costly, though you cant ignore bmws free maintenance program

When you say "girl", do yo mean wife or girlfriend? The only reason to get the X6 would be for performance driving, attracting attention and just to be different. I personally think they are very unique, but not very practical. There is also quite a large price different between the 2.
I loved my X5, but I would never own a BMW beyond it's warranty. I don't exactly see this as apples to apples. 2 completely different vehicles that will probably not be mentioned in the same sentance very often. The truth is, you win either way, just in different areas.

If she likes the BMW, then you will never hear the end of it if you make her buy the RX and she doesnt like it. The BMW is one heck of it machine. Not really fair comparison with the RX in my opinion. The BMW is better than the RX in every aspect, except for reliabilbity. The RX being a 1st year re-design, might not be that reliable. To me the choice is obvious, the BMW all the way.

Chumacher, if money is no object then of course X6 is a more "cool" choice! If you got the dough you dont care over long term reliability, you keep the ride until you get tired of it, then get yourself another one. I personally think that an Audi Q7 4.2 is an even better choice, priced at about 25 grand more than the RX.

I would compare the RX to a Audi Q5, not the Q7.

i've heard that before. she's gonna keep the RX330. it hasn't lost a lot of value since we bought it so it's worth keeping for now.

Is Q5 even in production?
Still, if given a chance to spend 70K on an SUV, there is nothing hotter out there right now than Q7. Audi styling is much better than of BMW, and current RX for sure lol

I'd rather touch the Audi than the BMW. Seems everyone who I knew back in Mexico who had an X5 wound up having issues with those vehicles shortly after sale, particularly electrical and issues with the plastic (especially if vehicle was kept in a sunny area in the case of the plastic). But I knew some people with the Audis and no such problems. Will be interesting once Lexus gets there to see how they fare, but the RAV4 is Mexico's most popular SUV in no small part due to its quality.

There is homework one can do and extrapolate based on prior history.

BUT

one has to wait and test drive the 2 [or the last 2]

The Q5 is in production as we speak, we should start seeing it on our shore by the 1st quarter of next year. The estimated price is about thhe same as the RX.
I agree about Audi being better than BMW, Audi has the perfect blend of handling and smooth suspension, the RX is soft and the X5 too stiff. Audi also have a very nice looking interior and their lighting treatment is 1st class.
Audi have made improvment in reliability for almost the last 10 year, they have the biggest gain in sales number in Europe and they are one of the few auto manufacturers who did not suffer double digit decline in sales in the US this year.

I dont think you can compare them. A X6 costs around $60,000 and is slotted as BMW Flagship SUV above the X5 and X3 repectivley. The RX is lexus cheapest suv and is considered entry level. I think you should compare it to the Infiniti EX or BMW X3, Merecedes GLK, Lincoln MKX and very maybe a Grand Cherokee Overland.

For the BMW X6 compare it to the Porche Canyene and Range Rover Sport.
